I just found a truck that has one in it, non running, just the motor no brackets or pullies. Block number 3963512. Thanks for any help, Randy

Here are the possibilities for this casting number (that I could find):

3963512 427 68-69 Passenger 385,425 HP
3963512 427 69 Chevelle, Camaro COPO (Central Office Production Order)
3963512 427 69 Corvette Late 69
3963512 454 70 Corvette, Passenger 360,390 HP
3963512 454 70 Chevelle LS-6 450 HP
3963512 454 70-71 Pass,Chevelle, Monte Carlo
3963512 454 71 Corvette 365,425 HP

So, if you're sure it's a 68/9 passenger car motor - then you know it's either a 385 or 425 hp eng. I'd say regardless of vintage - any 427 is worth a good bit of dough. The question really should be "why isn't it running"? Is it siezed? Does the seller say what's wrong with it? I'd sure want to know that it can rotate - at a minimum. If it can spin (even by hand with a wrench on the crank bolt) I'd say it's probably worth buying as long as there's no rods hanging out of the side of the block.... as for "how much" - not sure - I'd say a complete long block (that isn't running) may be worth up to $200-$400. If it's in really good shape with all the accessories still dangling (edit-sorry, re-read your post and see it has no brackets, so probably not worth much more), probably worth a little more. If you really need/want it, and can accept knowing it probably needs a rebuild, then it is up to you and your wallet - or if, perhaps, it's not a passenger car motor and is a vette motor(!) then it's probably worth more to a purist. Would need more numbers off the block than just the casting number. Good find! Good luck!

Any chance you can get the suffix code of the front of the motor? The COPO and LS-6 blocks would be worth the most out of the list posted above. If it's one of the others I would say 400-600 if it is in good shape with no damage.

Sorry I didn't get the code off front pad, I was going by what the owner said on impala. It was in a running truck till he wrecked it. Been sitting for a couple years. I can sell 402's and 396 for $300-$400 for bare motor, didn't know if 427 was worth more or not. Thanks Randy

If it's a COPO or LS6 engine, you are looking at some potentially serious money. I agree, the suffix code would shed a whole lot more light on the subject.

Don't know much about codes and all. But, I do know original 427's are worth alot of money because there aren't many of them left today. Also, if you go to get it rebuilt, make sure you write down all numbers, etc. because many engine shops will try to keep the block since they are so rare. Trust me, that engine is worth more than $600 as is. Rebuild correctly and it is worth a couple of thousand.

I look it over real good look for water in the oil or rust were the oil gres on the outer block melted off becouse it was run real hot. If all is good and usable get the date cods and it will bring over a grand shipping would be worth it.

I am by no means an authority on this but I think the 512 blocks are desired by resto guys and I would do some research before selling it. If you were closer I might try to hoodwink you out of it.

If the motor checked out(no damage), I'd buy it. Don't see 427s around too much, let alone a short deck for under a grand.

Since It's an Impala motor $750 seems on the high side.

Good condition with a good steel crank - maybe
Good condition with a good steel crank and rectangle port heads - It would be a steal

I'm going to assume its has oval port heads since its a 365 hp motor.

The only reason the 427s bring good money is for restos. So you could always luck out and find some one restoring a 427 impala that has to have it. I'd rather stick to 454's. More displacement, cheaper and easier to find.

Thanks guys, I've got a message to him, waiting to hear back. I can find 454's all the time, I just don't see that many 427's very often, the ones I do see are out of big trucks and are tall decks. It was a running motor when he wrecked the truck, I talked to a buddy of mine who knows him pretty well said he remembered when he wrecked the truck, said motor was good. Thanks Randy

Well I bought it, picking it up tomorrow evening. I'm not sure what I'll do with it but I'm sure it will be for sale and if it doesn't sell it can sit in the shop for a project when my son gets older

Trust me, you will not have a problem selling a 427. I don't care what it came out of. Regardless, if it's a Camaro, Impala, Corvette, etc engine, it will sell. I can guarantee it. Maybe not on here, but put it on Ebay or some other muscle car sites and it will fly out of your garage.

100% agreed.... i figured find some old IMPALA SS forums like this one and put it up on there..... should sell real easy for that guy looking for a correct engine for his restore..

The Corvette guys will buy the 512 blocks all day long.
They deck the blocks and re stamp them with the Corvette suffixes.
I sold a bare block 15 years ago for $500 cash to Pro Team Corvettes in OH.
427 Impalas are pretty darn rare in their own right.
I don't see you losing money on this one.
