change or no change?

Well I replaced my rear tranny seal today. But my pan gasket leaks.. the trans is a th350. Im not sure if its original or not. It is sitting on a new trans mount( if it makes a difference lol). The trans shifts great and pulls good.. a friend of my said I could burn it up with the fluid and filter behind changed. I know it could happen, so sometime soon im gonna replace the gasket and fluid. Any precautions I should take?
