Dropped nozzle inside gas tank

So I was putting gas in my truck with a 5 gallon container and the nozzle fell out of the container and down inside my gas tank. It's still the original tank behind my seat. Any suggestions?? Has this happened to anyone else before? The truck is still running fine but I don't like the thought of something being down in my gas tank.

Re: Dropped nozzle inside gas tank

You could likely leave it there forever and it would never cause a problem, unless I suppose it got hung up in the float arm.

You might want to try one of those flexible "claw" grabbers. That's about the only way I can think of, and that's going to be poking in the dark hoping for a lucky grab....

Before you do anything with anything, ground yourself and the tool. You don't want sparks.

Re: Dropped nozzle inside gas tank

I wouldn't worry to much about it.

You could run the tank as low as possible. Theb take the sender out, have a helper shine a light through the filler hole, and like davepl said use a claw and try to grab it.

Re: Dropped nozzle inside gas tank

Use a grabber but you need good light...use a road flare.

Just kidding of course. Like 68 said, run her close to empty and use a light. Kinda fish around.

Then id get rid of that can and nozzle, my nozzle has a bend at the end. I couldn't force it all the way in the tank if i tried

Re: Dropped nozzle inside gas tank

Is the nozzle plastic or metal? If its plastic does it float? If it floats you might not what to chase it down with an empty tank. If its metal can you use a strong magnet to bring it to the top. Just throwing stuff out for thought.

Re: Dropped nozzle inside gas tank

So the nozzle is plastic and its also hollow so im assuming that it has sunk to the bottom of the tank. I was just worried about it getting stuck to my float arm or doing something to my sending unit. I'm thinking if I take out the sending unit I should be able to see pretty well down inside the tank with a good light. Or I could just toss the whole tank and buy one that goes under the bed. I've needed to do that for a while. I hate how the tank is literally right up against my back. So much wasted space.

Try parking a hill with the filler tube facing down hill and shake the truck really hard. Then try fishing it out.

Re: Dropped nozzle inside gas tank

I have one of those grabber tools that was mentioned except mine has a LED light in the center of the "claws" so you can see what you're going after. Let me know if you want to use it, for the cost of shipping to and from, I have no problems loaning it to you, as long as I get it back in a reasonable timeframe.

Is the light chemical proof? The gas might destroy the light.Posted via Mobile Device

Talking Re: Dropped nozzle inside gas tank

I've used it with oils and solvents before shouldn't be a problem.

I don't see what's so funny. You can't get to it if it's on the passenger side of the tank.

Run the truck empty, remove the sending unit, get a coat hanger wire and FISH. you could even wrap some duck tape on the end and pull that thing out no problem.

Re: Dropped nozzle inside gas tank

There was one of them in the tank of
my k20 when i pulled it. The tank was trash anyway though.

If its one of the straight through nozzles i would see if it fit any other gas cans you have. These new style ones are JUNK!
