Oregon DEQ test results :smoke:

1978 GMC Heavy Half, 350, no smog equipment at all.

Passed with flying colors, test allows a higher reading for "non-cat" vehicles but guy said I would have passed even without that. Felt so good passing that Prius, had to brag!

Funny how that works, isn't it? No smog stuff and you can pass just fine, with the same numbers as if you had it. And you get better mileage than the guys with smog stuff... so those guys burn more fuel to go the same distance as you, so technically you are cleaner burning than they are since your fuel economy is better. It's the little things...

Very good results, but you realize that you should be riding a bicycle instead of driving a truck, since you live in Portland.

For sure lindstromjd, goes against everything they're feeding us.

As much as Portland is touted as a great bike friendly place, it seems that mostly I see two types of bike riders; guys in tank tops riding those tiny bmx bikes where their knees almost hit the handlebar and guys whose bike cost twice what I paid for my truck and whose clothes cost twice what I pay for rent. I guess I'm in the middle; I have a job to go to but I don't have a shower and air conditioned office waiting for me when I get there.

And Oregon does have a visual inspection; the just look with a little mirror on a stick. I believe since my truck was original manufactured without a cat that it isn't required.

Re: Oregon DEQ test results :smoke:

As I recall, trucks over 8600 GVWR were considered heavy trucks and did not require cats in the early years. I don't know if your half was heavy enough to qualify. My 83 C20 has no cats and no vapor recovery system, but it has a smog pump and a lot of smog lines - the pump and lines get a lot of inspection every time I go through emissions in AZ. All of that junk does take a toll on fuel economy, especially with a 454, but after a recent cheap rebuilt carb the emissions are very low.
