How much $$ for a running big block?

Called a guy today who has a 396 or 402 in a GMC he wants to sell for $400. He says it runs good but could probably use a cam and set of lifters(says the lifters rattle). It is still in the truck and is drivable. Does this seem like a fair price? What would be a ballpark range on it?
thanks for any info as I've never had a BB.
Matthew

Keep in mind that if it probably needs a cam and lifters, rings and bearings are probably not too far behind. Still not a bad price for a rebuildable BB thats running.

They don't give them away, but I have a 454 I'm pulling out of my dually. I'm thinking, do I even want this thing anymore?
Ran very well, would even burn off all four wheels.

i paid $300 for my SMALL block, and it was running, but smoking (indicating the rings probably needed replaced). so, i imagine you arent getting a bad deal there for a BIG block. i think its a pretty decent price!

go for it!

Makes me wonder what I should ask for a Vortec 350 with 80,000 odd miles. TBI intake, distributor, heads included. No wiring or computer though. Any ideas?

I would be all over that deal. BBs are getting harder and harder to come by. Even if you didn't want it you could put it on Ebay make one hell of a profit. That is a steal!!!! It has all the brackets and mounts.

If it comes with all the brakets I would pay that if it was locked up. The last BB I bought was a 454 with all the brackets...AC,PS,ALT...I gave 750 for it and it needed a rebuild

I'd jump on that deal even if I didn't have something to put it in, of course I'd have to find something. It's deifinitely one of those "how could ya not" deals, IMHO.

Thanks for all the replys. I haven't got to look at it yet! He had to work extra but we're set-up for Sunday afternoon. He said it has the A/C, PS, alt, brackets. Complete motor. Thanks for the input, as I had no clue about BB's.
