I have a 71 k-5 with 307 3-speed on the column. Does anyone know what gear ratio came in it? 3.08 or 3.73? I have the owners manual but all it says is B.E. Base Equipment. On the 4x4's were all of them posi?

They were not all posi. If your truck is stock and NEVER tampered with, there is a tag on the Dana 44 cover in the front with the axle ratio stamped on it.

Pop the cover off and count the teeth or look for the stamping ont eh gears them selves.
The oil has probably not been chainged for 20 years anyways.

Stock ratio with the 307 cid V-8 (or a 6 cyl.) was 3.73. 3.07s were standard with a 350 cid V-8.

Thanks for the info. The truck has never been messed with. I bought it form the 2nd owner and he is close friends with the 1st owner. The tags on the diffs are gone I looked. I plan on changing the oil this weekend so I'll take a look at the gears. I have another question it maybe a dumb one but. How can you tell if it's a posi? When you open it up is the carrier diffrent or something? I have never taken a diff cover off. I would think the ring gear teeth would be easy to count but wouldn't the pinion teeth be hard to see. I hope it's stamped somewhere on the ring gear. One more. Is it better to use a gasket on the diff cover or silicone gasket maker?

Put the trans in neutral with no brake and lift one wheel off the ground first. If that wheel will turn, no posi. Now lift the other wheel also. If you turn one wheel and the other turns the opposite direction or not at all, no posi. If you turn one wheel and the other turns the same direction, than it's a posi.

I forgot one other way.

Go out and from a full stop (maybe a tiny bit of brake at first), and stomp on the gas pedal. Get out and check for two black marks or just one.
