Anyone that can refurbish a GMC grill?
Is there a company or anyone out there that can straighten and rechrome a GMC grill? A company called Bumper Boys can do bumpers, any such thing for grills? $400 for a new repop GMC grill is a little steep.

I paid $700 in the Eco freindly Northwest. Grille was super straight off a 33K truck. Find a dealer who will sell one below list.

Re: Anyone that can refurbish a GMC grill?
I read a while back on this forum some guy was having his repop grille rechromed for something like $2500 if I remember right. $400 sound any better now?

Re: Anyone that can refurbish a GMC grill?
It`s a catch22 with these grilles.I can`t see scrapping a straight grille with pits crudding up the chrome. But,who wants a nice truck that needs a better grille after making everything else like new?Ityway.`s hard to scrap anything off these trucks an

Re: Anyone that can refurbish a GMC grill?
grills arent chrome and you dont want to have them chromed, they are anodized, there are places that will restore grill but most of the time its very costly because they have to repair/straiten, strip the anodizeing off then re anodize it, plus you have shipping costs both ways, the repo is the way to go for shure

Re: Anyone that can refurbish a GMC grill?
Just this morning I visited with a guy who will do the restoration of an aluminum grille, but told me that for him to do my straight '69 Chevy grille, it would run from $450-500. New ones are available at that price.
Guess I'll get to it for my own peace of mind.

Re: Anyone that can refurbish a GMC grill?
I guess repop it is then. I will just put the old grill on the wall in the garage for something to look it, because it is still in good shape.

Re: Anyone that can refurbish a GMC grill?
You could always sell it, someone somewhere needs a grill & wants it painted. Sounds like yours could be painted and look good!

Re: Anyone that can refurbish a GMC grill?
He was talking about a GMC grill, which was chromed, not an Anodized Chevy grill.
I wonder if anybody has tried powder coating a GMC grill as a less expensive alternative to re-chroming. They have some new powders out now that look nearly like chrome.

Re: Anyone that can refurbish a GMC grill?
And that is my next question. I have a friend who has a powder-coating business. He did my wheels, and we talked about the colors he has. He mentioned a near-chrome look that they have, but wasn't really sold on it being able to satisfy someone who wanted chrome, but didn't want to pay for chrome. Now, he does cobalt-plating, in lieu of chrome. It's environmentally friendly, and can also be used on plastics, helmets, etc.
Anyway, I saw a trim piece for a Cushman scooter that had been powder-coated with the chrome-look material. It looked good, but I'm concerned that the build-up of material will affect the clean edges of the CHEVROLET indentions in the face of my grille. I will be talking to him on Thursday. I'll report back, in case anyone has questions.

Re: Anyone that can refurbish a GMC grill?
The powder coat looks nothing like chrome. It is a bright silver.

Re: Anyone that can refurbish a GMC grill?
The factory GMC Grills are not chromed.
Are the clear anodized ones sold? Seems like all of the ones I see are chrome. |

No... the factory GMC grills are stamped mild steel... They are chrome... you cant anodize steel. The Chev grills are aluminum...they are anodized... but you can chrome aluminum... confused yet? |

Re: Anyone that can refurbish a GMC grill?
Original GMC grills are stamped steel grills. They were either chrome plated or painted and not verry many were painted. WES
