Brake Pad Trouble
I have almost completed my disc brake and 5 lug swap on my 68 GMC. I purchased a 1987 Chevy rolling frame. The problem I am running into is when I try to put the calipers on with the pads in them they will not slide over the rotors. I measured the rotors and they measure aproximately 1-1/8" thick after I had them turned. When I put the pads in the new calipers (rebuilt from O'Reilly) they measure 1-1/16" between them. We have already made sure the pistons in the calipers were all the way in and they are. Has anyone else ran into this. If so what was your solution. On a side not the roller I bought had the F44 spindles on it don't know if this is what is causing the problem.

have you used a c clamp to fully compress the caliper for clearance???

We did. Still no luck. I have just went and got another brand of pads hoping they are a little thinner that the autozone ones.

I think I may have just found the problem I think I have gotten the JB1 canlipers instead of the JD5.

Here are the brake system release charts which were used to release the individual components in the 1987 brake system.
You can take a look at this and see what you've got: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=510519 If you want to use the parts you have currently you could "scuff" the surface of the pads a bit to wear off the 1/16" you are lacking (...or - run them on a vehicle to wear them down a bit). K

Thanks the charts help a lot. I just wish I hadn't already painted the calipers I have now. I did speak to the manager of the O'Reillys I use and they are going to see if they can swap them for the correct ones since I painted them silver instead of the red color caliper paint. Either way it is just $28 I will gladly pay that so I can move on with this part of the project.

Swapped out calipers today I have to say O'Reilly has just won them a lifetime customer on this. They swapped out the calipers no hassle at all. All it cost me was the difference in the calipers and core charges. a whole $14.00.
