Who here is Military: Serving or Veteran?

Just curious. I'm fresh in the Air National Guard. Completed Air Force Basic Training in May. I am home for split training. I leave at the end of August for my MOS training at Sheppard AFB. Training will be a duration of 6 months for Aerospace Ground Equipment. Basically, a mechanic on generators, some hvac equipment, diesel powered generators, small gasoline powered engines, and everything in-between. My recruiter told me this is a very versatile MOS and transfers into the Civilian life well. I'm hands-on, previously did lots of HVAC work but got laid off too many times. This MOS should fit me well. Father is a former Marine. It was either Air Force or Marines for me. Proud of my decision!

So, who is currently serving or has?

Re: Who here is Military: Serving or Veteran?

I'm former USMC, Sgt E5, 66-70. 1 tour Chu Lai 68-69, spent most of my time on the runway with Airfield Operations. We currently have a grandson in the Air Force serving in Saudi. Normally he's an F117 crew chief but currently filling another capacity.

Good luck on your military service. Are you intending to make a career out of it or just one enlistment. In your situation it sounds like what your recruiting told you might actually be true. Historically, they have been known to stretch the truth a bit - anything from artillery to sniper is always directly transferable to civilian life! Personally, I never found much demand in the civilian work force for how far a person can throw a grenade! My recruiter told me I could spend my entire 4 year enlistment close to home, and could come home every weekend free on military aircraft if I just signed up for an extra two years. And of course I signed up. Talk about naive!

Again, good luck and thanks for serving.

Re: Who here is Military: Serving or Veteran?

Thanks for deciding to serve!

USN 84-96. Combination active and reserve. Aircraft mechanic.

It's a great idea to let the military train you for a skill that pays on the street, but don't forget to do some stuff to have fun too! Some of my best memories/lessons from the service had nothing to do with the job I was assigned.

Good luck!!!

Re: Who here is Military: Serving or Veteran?

I served in the military during the Vietnam Conflict 66-68, actually my years in the military were 64-70, but 66-68 was the combat zone time.

My recruiter blew smoke, you know where, mostly what he said was B.S.

One lesson I learned the hard way, was never volunteer.

I made a lot of friends in the military as well as lost a lot of friends.

God bless our military men and women for the sacrafices they are making to serve our country.

AT2 USN 99-03 did two cruises over to the Med...one during Operation Enduring Freedom on the Kennedy and one during Operation Iraqi Freedom on Truman, both aircraft carriers...loved my time in the Navy...wish they would have given me the orders I wanted when I was up for reenlistment...If they had I'd probably still be in...

All of the services have their ups and downs. Air Force knows how to live, but the discipline is not there. Navy gets to see lots of places and do cool stuff, but you're stuck on a boat a lot. Army I haven't spent much time around, but the one unit I did spend time with was treated like dirt. Last but not least you have the Marine Corps. To be honest, I have went through some tough/bad times in the Corps, yet at the end of the day all the good is worth it. If you have and specific questions, let me know.

Re: Who here is Military: Serving or Veteran?

Enlisted in the regular Army at 24, Light Wheel Vehicle Mechanic.. Germany for 3 years, Desert Storm 91/92, two tours there, 101st Airborne Division, 1st Brigade, Bloody Bastards of Bastone, 9 years there, two trips to Sinai, changed MOS's to be an avionics technican (fixing electronic components for helicopters) 4th Infantry Division, Iron Horse, 8 years, 3 trips to Iraqi Freedom, retired in 2008, went to work as a contractor to the Army, repairing radios and computers for helicopters. Deployed to Iraqi 2008-2009, currently deployed to Afghanistan 2010-2011 supporting the 3ID and 4ID

My son is currently active duty Air Force, deployed to Afghanistan, saw him just the other day over here... pretty ironic that my last day in the Army was his first day in the Air Force

May God bless our sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, aunts uncles and friends who serve our great nation, defending our freedoms and protecting out way of life.

Re: Who here is Military: Serving or Veteran?

Somebody a couple of reply's ago forgot the U.S. Coast Guard.
I signed up in '61. Graduated high school on a Thursday, and was on my way to boot camp the following Tuesday. Went to Southeast Asia (Viet Nam/Thailand) '66 and '67. I swore my son into the USCG two months before I retired, so technically we were in at the same time. He's still active duty after 29 years. I retired in '81.
My daughter was a "Spook" in the Airforce for a hitch, and my youngest was in the delayed enlisted program for the Army.
Would I do it again? Yes, I would. Top notch training, you use Uncle Sam's tools, his toys, and you get paid from day one. A person could do worse.

Re: Who here is Military: Serving or Veteran?

Sure sounds like there are quite a few veterans on this forum.

I think all branches have good points and bad points as all vets know.

I think it is a good idea for anyone that can to serve in the military. I was in 6 years learned a lot and grew up a lot. I went in at 18 as a kid and got out at 24 a man.

My advice to anyone going in though is to chose a branch and a field that will prepare you for a job when you get out if you can.

I would like to thank all our veterans and those currently in the military for keeping this country free.
