disc brake swap

Hi all Have a few questions on this 70 I bought it has drums in the front and is a 6 lug. He gave me everything for the front rotors, spindals, calbers, upper and lower A arms, the main frame cross member. and a rear end all in five lug.
Do I have to change that main cross member and the A arms? And also I don't know what year all these parts came from and he did not know to. So is there any way I can figure out what year truck these parts are from?
Thanks jay

Re: disc brake swap

mm how thick are the rotors? Will the spindles fit your balljoints?

take your spindle to the parts store and ask to see 71-72 balljoints, see if they look like the'y'll fit in your spindle..

im sure theres a better way but this is just my 2cents

Re: disc brake swap

First the simple answer, the only thing you need to change are the ball joints. BUT...they need to match the year of the disk brake spindle. You can change the A-arms if you want, there are various opinions on which are preferable. And even the cross member, but none of that is necessary.

My A-arms are the original '70 ones. What you might try is to take the disk spindle to your favorite parts store and try a 71-72 balljoint set and a 73-87 balljoint set. Someone around here might chime in on how to tell the difference.

Good luck...it's a great improvement.

Re: disc brake swap

ok never thought but trying the ball joints.. Just went out there the ball joints I have I know are for a 71 -72 and they seem to be to small for the lower A arm can all most tap them in. The hole is 2in wide and the rotors are 11/4in thick
thanks jay O and would I have to change the upper arm and that main center frame part

Re: disc brake swap

67-70 and 71-72 balljoints will go into all 67-72 a arms, they WONT ALL go into the spindle

If I had to do my swap again, id buy aftermarket drop spindles that fit 67-70 balljoints tierod ends, its a perfect bolt on.

But GET THE DISC BRAKE SWAP DONE BEST MOD OUT THERE!!!!!!

So the tie rods are different for 70 to 71 and 72?

yeah most def going change it all over to disc just wanna kinda get a game plan and all the right parts so I'm not sitting there all p ed off

Thanks again jay
