What rear is this in my 68 CST C20 ? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I just picked up this 68 C20 with a Pullman Camper. It has a weird 10 bolt cover drop out style rear end. Looks like an old Olds/Pontiac rear. I was looking online and i couldnt find it. Here are the pics.

We genericly call it the Eaton rear.
It is a corperate rear, with an Eaton differental, also called an HO52.

Do a search on this website. There's lots of threads/info.

I think it's a good rear. The downsides are the lack of gears below 4.10 (except for some aftermarket 3.90s that are hard to find), and the spherical carrier bearings are somewhat sensitive to debris and expensive to replace.

they are awesome dam near indestructible rears.
but parts are getting hard to find, the lack of higher gears... 4.10 is as high as you'll find. If you want lower gears, they are plentifull for this rear, and anyone with a 67 - 72 dually, they'll be more than happy to give you the 5.13 in there truck.
Brake parts are hard to locate, and when you do locate them, you'll only fid a few pieces. Things like drums were discontinued 20 years ago.

Thanks for the help guys. The posi still works and with the tall tires it has it isnt bad driving. The brakes have only a 1000 miles on them so im good for now. The drums were turned and are in good shape. Needless to say its gonna stay in

I have the same rear end in my 72 C20, it had 4.57s, but I swapped to 4.10s, the rear end is very strong, I love it!

I don't know if Napa still has them,but in '04 I bought all the brake parts,bearings,and seals from them. Wheel studs required some extra searching,but they came up with those,too.

Its getting harder and harder to find some parts for Old cars and trucks. You make me wanna track down parts now and stock up. I havnt removed the drums to inspect the brakes yet. But he did give me the old pads he used and they were in good shape, no grooves. Just i set was cracked. The star wheel must have been adjusted wrong on one wheel.

They can easily be converted to disk brakes. You do it they same as you would on the 14bff. You can also use axle shafts from a 14bff as long as you swap out the spider gears from the 14bff or find a detroit locker from the 14bff.

Thats good info for the future. I most likly wont do a disk brake swap. But if i have a hard time finding parts its good to know more ways to get R done. Thanks
