today's score

So my UPS driver tells me his dad has a truck that looks like my suburban.
its been parked in a garage for 15 or so years... now buried underneath years of stuff ...well i say is it chevy or jimmy? "i don't know. but its got the same head lights as yours" and the wind shield is the same as yours too!. "whats dad gonna do with it?" i say.

well dad is in a old folks home, had a couple of strokes, so i don't know what to do with it!

well i say cautiously " i know what to do with it! what do you and your dad want for it?" well after a couple of weeks he says "Frank i talked with mom and she said it would be nice to have a garage again,.. lets say $1000 bucks and of course i said "SOLD" with out ever seeing it.

this was monthes ago... so friday he said mom has dug the truck out... you ready? hows tomorrow at 9 am sound? .... i was there at 8;50!

its got the normal rust, but not to bad, ..except on the windsheild eyebrow and rain gutter area, and it turns out to be a '62, like the burb, and a GMC! (my favorite) also been in the family since new, and never hit.

i just want to get her running and road worthy , then go pick up pops from the old folks home and go for a ride...

the family have SO MANY stories about this truck, you know its a part of the family, so i'm really stoked to get her going again soon, as they are too.

first pic is how it has been for a while ,then with the original family, and as i got it to the shop... more to come soon

Nice score. My old UPS driver used to come in my garage and gaze at my projects. He hated when I ordered real heavy stuff. lol

Outstanding. Great story, family history, the body looks to be very straight. Nice it was garaged for the last 15 years instead of sitting outside under a tarp. Sometimes things just fall in your lap. Good for you.

Re: today's score

Love it! That is quite the score, I must say. It looks like it's never been molested, so I'm guessing that it still has the GMC (305?) engine in it.

I have always felt that if you treat people nice, good things come your way. You have GOT to get it running and take Grandpa for a ride. It doesn't get any cooler than that!

Re: today's score

Cool, thanks all!
yes it still has the 305 motor and 4 on the floor tranny.no clutch, don't know why yet. and no brakes. so i have some fixing to do but can't wait to start working on and drive her.
the owner, i'll call "dad" was a LAPD officer, hence the black and white paint job (originally a salmon looking color, which i'll find out more soon)
i'll have some more pics and more story coming ASAP.
gotta get back to work now....

Re: today's score

All right so i drove her home today from the shop.
i've replaced the motor, the complete hydrualic system for the brakes, fabricated a new exhaust system, put on the good tires and wheels ..greased up anything i saw with zert fittings and replaced all fluids.

i dropped the front end a bit.

fired it up and drove it 11 miles down the freeway home for the first test ride... man it felt good..

looking forward to more daily progress. i'd like to lower the rear a bit... a little paint work on the headlight bezels, paint shop logo on the doors (it IS the new shop truck!) old school look of course,
and also thinking of painting in the logo and trim on the rear gate white too.

i'll drop some more pics soon

Re: today's score

Originally, the GMC logo and trim on the tailgate was a very light grey. In the previous Blue Chip (55-59) series of trucks , GMC used a Scotch/3M reflective tape that showed up as light grey in the daytime on the GMC tailgate logo. I bet that could still be obtained from 3M. Maybe you need it for safety out in California!?!

cool tip K-TEN! i'll see what i can find, thanks!

heres today, lowered it a bit in the rear with a torch.
made exhaust tip you can see pop out in front of left rear tire
plus misc. cleaning ,(wd-40 wipe down.)
...and re-re adjust brakes, gettin' better each time.

now since this is gonna be a "shop truck" I'm looking into gettin some patina logo put on the sides .... doors or rear quarter? i'm not sure yet...
maybe i'll start a forum on that.

Amazon.com: 3M 03455C Scotchlite Reflective Tape,... Amazon.com: 3M 03455C Scotchlite Reflective Tape,...
A couple of those might get you started. But it's gonna be tedious work!

Re: today's score

The shop logo looks best on the doors, and the phone number and address looks best on the tailgate, and whatever your shop specializes in looks best on the top side of the bed above the body crease.

If you need somebody to do the job, PM Kustombrad here on the site. He has worked with a lot of the big-name painters in So Cal (Dick Vale, Billy B, Chip Foose, and others), and he loves to do shop logos. He's got a thread on the 47-59 section showing a '49 shop truck that he's building (Project No-Buck$$). It's got a bunch of shots of the old school striping and the logo on the doors.

Love your truck. I think that it needs the rims painted white with stock GMC caps and I'm thinkin' that it needs red lettering outlined in white with some old school striping tying it all together. Don't forget to do the tailgate, too!

Yea i was gonna paint the wheels white but then changed my mind at last minute.. but i think i'll try it this weekend, maybe only on one side to see what i like best. ...
also was thinking about maybe a pinstripe on wheels as well.
and i have stock GMC hub caps, but i don't like the style i have,, too "boxy"... see if i have a pic. maybe some baby moons?

soon i'll be able to go pick up "pops" from the old folks home and go for a ride
more to come soon
