putting a 60-66 steering column in a 2nd series 55

Im a regular on the 60-66 board, but a buddy called yesterday and asked if a 60-66 steering column will work on his 55 second series? He doesn't like the factory column which puts the wheel up in his chest. His other option if the 60-66 column wont fit is to cut down the 55 column around 6". Can anybody tell me if it'll work or if theres another chevy/gmc that will bolt in with mild mods? Thanks

Re: putting a 60-66 steering column in a 2nd series 55

It isn't going to lower the wheel unless he is changing the steering box and shaft to begin with.

The steering shaft is a one piece solid rod on those trucks and to lower the wheel he would have to take the box apart and take the shaft to a machine shop and have it shortened the correct amount.

I know what he is going through as my 48 has the stock column with a mid 70's steering wheel and the truck is chopped 4 inches and has a seat that sets a couple of inches lower than stock.

I'll have to look when I get home but there is an article in either Custom and Classic truck or Rod & Custom or Street Rodder this month or last on shortening a column in an older truck. They used the stock top half and added the bottom half of a later model shaft but connecting the two shafts would be the same .
