I cant believe this happened to me. I have to replace the fender...will a GMC fender fit my 1970? I am reading a lt of conflicting ideas. I only drove the truck with the new rims less than 400 yards. I was doing a test fit and I knew I had the wrong typ of lug nuts...thought they would have held up better. DAMN!

Oops!!

The GMC fenders will not work. They will fit, but the leading edge on the front of a 69-72 Chevy fender is recessed to allow for the grille to slip over it, that lip on the 67-72 GMC (and 67-68 Chevys) is not recessed.

wow. sorry to hear that. I had a similar issue with a 57 chev i had, except it happened at about 60 mph... note to self: remember to re-tighten the lug nuts on new mags (these were cragar s/s with unilig holes and the correct lug nuts). Seller told me to tighten em up after about 100 miles. They fell off at about 90.... hope you get it fixed soon, bummer.

Lug nuts rather correct or not are critical.

I drove the Circuit Rider to a meet last year and when I got there 3 of the 5 were missing.

It could have been very bad

Thanks for the fast informaton about the fender. I got the two new fenders for only $100...so not that bad. Repairable...??? I am not really sure but I am kinda leaning that way now. The wheel kicked up in the fender and ballooned it out. I am not sure how many hours the body shop will have in it. Any advice? Everything is original on it and I would like to keep it that way.

Had the same thing happen to me with my new wheels. I was going about 55 when i watched my left front wheel go a mile infront of me. I was lucky the only damage was a rubber mark on the fender and wallered out lug nut wholes and a 1/2 ate off my brake rotor. Go to find out it was because they were new aluminum wheels and your suppose to torque them to a certain amount and re check them, which i was not told. then when i fixed that they still liked to come loose, so i took it into the tire shop and the problem was that i didnt have a notch on the wheel holes to clear the little lip from the bolt studs were there mounted. All in the end i got them fixed and found out new Aluminum wheels can be a b@#$%!!

I would try to fix it before you replace it. Fixing will require little paint. Replace will require a repaint of the whole finder. Replacing with used will likely still require some metal work. Repair will probably be cheaper in the longrun and you will probably be happier with it.

Man that could have been way worse. That is a sweet truck and I think the fender is fix-able.

Based on my own experience that fender appears to be needing 6-8 hours of labor. I'd look for a correct replacement. The good news is that parts come pretty easy for our trucks.

Been there, done that, founded the club. Sorry to hear it! For me insurance wound up buying me what had to be one of the few remaining NOS fenders out there...

The HOROR!!! Now THAT sucks. I could handle a little damage to my old truck, I would freak if I had a 69 SS that nice and it got jacked up!

Yeah it must be a reccord of some sort...doing research and there is a different lug that is needed with a aluminum rim. I was using the type for steel rims. Sent it to the shop and it should be back by next week.

That 69 Camaro is sweet. Thanks for not making me feel so bad.

Not to be a now it all, but I always like to buy the lug nuts from the wheel co, or at least double check their recommendation before buing my one.

Also, "aluminum" does not always decide which type of lug nut you use. I currently have some 17"'s Impala SS wheels that I will be using on a 72 swb step, and a set of MB motoring 17"'s on a 79 Malibu and they all use the same "acorn" tapered lug nut that the factory steel wheel originally on the vehicles used. I will use the factory style open ended nuts on the SS wheels since they will be covered by a cap (Venture mini van caps, BTW, smoother and cheaper than SS caps). I bought a nice set of closed end chrome nuts for the 'bu, since they are exposed.

With any vehicle, wheel or lug nut type, I like to torque the nuts, then drive in a few figure eights or up and down the street, turning side to side, then recheck the lug nuts. This is with the correct style nuts installed, of course.

I run the other way from old school uni- lug wheels. I had 71 El Camino years ago with these and had a flat at night. The spare was a matching uni lug as well. I wrested with those stupid spacers for an hour before I finally got it on. I pulled them all of and put a set of wheels like the 71-72 Chevelles and EC's as well as mid 70's late 80's Z28's had. (They were a 5 spoke like Cragar SS but were steel and usually painted body color andhad a stainless steel trim ring.
