It pays to know what motor you really have!
I posted several months ago about the water pump pulley for my 283 not lining up correctly. I posted on this site about the problem and everyone including myself was wondering WTF! I had to change the location of the pulley mounting flange by removing the back of the pump and supporting the shaft and pressing the flange down 3/16". As it turns out, the motor was really a 305. I checked with O'Reilly and sure enough, different part numbers. That explains what the deal was. It pays to really know what you have. I kinda feel like a dumba$$...oh well, chit happens...LOL

Makes sense- that's about the difference in the thickness of an original 283 harmonic balancer and what a 305 would have on it.

Sometimes to this day I wonder if the 292 in my 64 C-20 is stock...the engine was pulled a long time ago to do a 4 speed conversion..it originally was a 3 speed column shift. So I wonder if the 292 was even stock. It seemed like the 230/ 3 speed column was the most common.

When I was 1st searching for gen IV big blocks, all I heard was corvette. Funny thing is when you run the suffix codes, none of them came back to corvettes. Most were chevelle, Camaro, monte's, or other car engines.
I think there are more corvette motors for sale than were built. Funny thing is there are so many engines that were just as good or not better in the late 60's and early 70's that it wouldn't matter if it was a vette engine or not.
