leaks,leaks,leaks........
Hello all,
yesterday i took a little spin and cruised around about 20 miles! Before i started i checked oil and water and all was ok.I noticed a little water in the first valley on the in take behind the heaterport and thought it dropped of the hood because it was wet on the inside. Cleaned that and started the cruise. after that 20 mile i did a WOT start and at the next trafficlight the idle was very low and the motor allmost died and sounded odd! I checked for some visible problems but could´t find anything! The headergaskets were blowing by on both sides where only the passenger one next to the firewall did before and it sounds like the collectorgaskets also blow by! The idling was still very low so i turned idlesetscrew on the carb up a little. Today i checked and retorqued the headerbolts but they weren´t loose. While doing that i noticed the passengerside valvecover leaking oil and the water on the intake was there too. Below the carblinkage is oil on the intake and the radiator misses some water. The frontlip of the suspensioncrossmember is carrying an oilfilm and the starter is too! Is it time to pull the engine and replace all the gaskets? Are there some headergaskets that work better? I have rubbergaskets for the valvecovers, should i go back to cork? Where does the water and oil on the intake come from? Does the engine press it out the thraeds of the screws? How difficult is it to replace the rear crankshaft seal? Lot of questions and i hope i can get some helpfull hints and tricks to solve all that leakage! Volker

if theres oil around the bolts on your intake, take them out and put teflon or loc-tite or something on the threasd and out them back in one at a time. they will leak oil if theyre not sealed

Not much help to ya here, just another member with a similar issue. I thought I had my engine all buttoned up last week. Come to find out I have an intake gasket leaking. Oh well, time to pull and replace. Good thing for people in our situation is gaskets normally arent that expensive. Its just time consuming to do the work.

hello.you definitely wanna be sure head bolts and intake bolts have a sealer of some sort on them.as for the cross member being wet your probably
gonna want to dry everything up and have a look at bottom side of water pump.thats usually where water lays from a bad water pump.couple places to start looking.. |

Believe it or not, I always use stock exhaust manifold gaskets at the head when using headers. They never leak for me, work perfect, and are cheap. Also, they are the same size as the ports on the heads so you dont restrict anything either.

I found out that the oil on the crossmember is from the oilpan and timingcover gaskets.
The intakebolts are not sealed and the water on the intake seems to drip from the heaterhose. I think i´ll have to pull the engine and do a complete change on all gaskets! Or should i leave the motor in the truck and bust my knuckles? If i can get some nice Ramhorns i rebuild the whole exhaust and that would take care of the headergasketheadache! Volker
