Swaping an automatic tranmission to a manual. PLEASE HELP

Hello guys

I have an 87 truck and in had a 454/700R4 setup. I was thinking to convert the transmission to a manual. I guess its just funner to drive My motor runs about 300 RWHP, and I wanted to know what is the best transmission to use, and what is the best bell housing suitable for my motor and transmission, and what another things that need to be modified and replaced. I also wanted to ask about the clutch and clutch pedal setup.

Thank you in advance and I am sure I will get the help that I need here

For a transmission NV4500 5spd would be my first choice. That said when I did mine I used a Muncie SM465 4spd, and a mechanical clutch. It's easiest if you can find a donor truck for all the little parts.

When you say fun, I assume you mean how you'd drive a Camaro or a Corvette. A truck style transmission like an SM465 or NV4500 is not gonna get you that. They won't shift quickly and the gear spacing is too wide, but they are excellent for hauling or towing heavy loads.

You will need a car transmission. Since you have a big block and a truck, you will need one that is strong. Either Muncie 4 speed or Borg Warner Super T10 is a good choice. If you want overdrive, a T56 6 speed is a good choice but the swap is a bit more in depth.

Re: Swaping an automatic tranmission to a manual. PLEASE HELP

I bought an SM465 last week for my diesel truck, it's a bolt-in swap but as stated not a close ratio quick shifting high performance type transmission. I just want one truck to have the 3rd pedal. When picking a trans consider if its got the hydraulic clutch or not. You'll also need the pedal assembly out of a manual trans truck and the steering column as well. You don't have to change out the column, but it'll look more correct. Also make sure to get the reverse gear wire with the trans. You may also need the driveshaft lengthened depending what you swap in, crossmember moved, etc.

Re: Swaping an automatic tranmission to a manual. PLEASE HELP

Thank you for all the input, this has been really helpful.

I was wondering if anyone has part numbers or knows where i can buy these parts because I am a newbie and don't have any experience HAHA

I wasnt to do the labour in a local shop but i wanted to buy all the parts myself.

My truck is an 87 stepside, other than the column the gears display (P R N D 1 2), i have totally no idea from where to find the other parts.

I found the tranny which is a SM465:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/CHEVY-TRUCK-...3aa79b&vxp=mtr

but where can i find the bell housing ?

Clutch assembly ? (hydraulic clutch)

and any other small parts.

I was also thinking to go with a stock shifter, are there any insulators for the new hole in the truck floor ?

Sorry i'm being such a pain but i am new to these things LOL

Thanks for the help in advance and i really appreciate it

All that stuff is on ebay is on ebay or craigslist. I got everything off craigslist for a good price. If that's a fast truck, you don't want an SM465, that might be the worst transmission for a fast truck. It's a wide-ratio four speed with a granny low. Its suited for off road and heavy towing.

yes get on i10 and drive over to the junk yards and start pulling parts.

or even buy a chassis with all the stuff you need.

your in mesa, your close to all the parts youll ever need less than 10 mins frm you.

this board will help you with ideas suggestions but go to the yards and actually look at and get the things you need.

and your truck will be more "funner" with your auto in the long run
