suicide knob

Anyone have a line on heavy duty brodie knobs.
I saw an ebay knob today. What a piece of junk. I want one that will fit my stock skinny steering wheel.
One that can actually help me steer the old truck.

Re: suicide knob

just a heads up I had one on my truck before I installed power steering.
A SJPD officer was checking my truck out and said that suicide knobs were illegal he was cool about it but said I could get a ticket for it.
But if you want one check out Moon Eyes ,Speedway.

Re: suicide knob

Didn't know they were illegal. Really though, it won't help you steer your truck at all, in fact just the opposite. It's a nostalgic throwback to decades ago, and is just for looks. I might put one on a '50s show car but that's about it. Actually I wouldn't (not my style) but I can see where they would look right in that setting. Just my 2 cents, don't throw rocks at me.

You might try looking at a farm tractor dealership. They're not purty, tho. All were a plain aluminum color, but heavy duty. We used to use them on a lot of our equipment. Some of them had ball bearings in them.

Re: suicide knob

Look up Edsen Power Knob, they're stainless steel, heavy, ball-bearings, etc. I've had one on my boat for several years now and it's nice.

Re: suicide knob

I don't think the idea was ever to make steering easier. It's just a way to steer with one hand and another way to hold the wheel. You can't get a vehicle to steer any easier than both hands gripping the rim pushing and pulling. They are a cool accessory, but are illegal and called suicide knobs for a reason. They are most dangerous w/o power steering, because terrain can steer the wheels. I'm not telling anyone what to do. I'm just saying what I know.

I had a truck (no p/s) with a racing wheel on it. You know, three spokes with five wholes in them. I was wearing a Levi jacket and I don't button the cuffs. I was on rutty ground backing up to turn around when a brass cuff button fit itself right into one of those wholes and jammed my elbow down into my thigh so hard and fast it gave me one heck of a charlie horse. I can see how it could have been a broken wrist. That is the type of thing a suicide knob risks, only at multiple times the risk and in many other ways.

Re: suicide knob

I was under the impression it was there to allow you to steer with one hand and let you use your other hand to get friendly with the girl sittin next to you

Similar deal. I had one on an old tractor, no ps. I was turning around on the end of the field, looking over my shoulder, knob slipped out of my hand. Steering wheel spun back, hit my funny bone. That will almost make you cause a big warm wet spot in the seat.

Re: suicide knob

Whatever you do, don't put one on a racing steering wheel. That thing is liable to hop up off the column and beat you silly!

I'm not sure if it was that incident with the Levi jacket cuff button/steering wheel or not, but I never wear my jacket in the truck anymore. The truck has heat and why be all bunched up in there?
