Wood dash cluster
Hey guys I know that I saw someone make a wood dash cluster for there truck. I have searched but cant find the thread. Does anyone have it bookmarked

Well I am about to start making one for the dash cluster and probably for the glove box. I actually stopped by my old high school today to talk to my shop teacher. I wanted to see if had had any kids that were any good that would make it and i would pay them. He told me that none of the kids cared about making stuff in shop anymore. But he offered to let me do it myself on wednesdays. So this week im gonna start working on it. I havent decided on material yet but im gonna post the progress as I go I just wanted to see the other thread for any cool ideas.

Are you planning on using solid wood?
Since the dash would be like Swiss cheese when you're done, you're very likely to have splitting along the grain when it shrinks/expands. I would strongly consider a hardwood plywood so that it has cross grains for strength. If you don't want the ply edges to show, you could mitre in solid wood on the edges. much like a narrow picture frame. (I do woodwork when I'm not playing with my truck)

I have thought about it warping but have no idea of how to prevent it. My plan was to use a good piece of wood without any knots and keep it mounted tight to the dash so it wont warp

I have made two. One of red oak and one of Walnut. I think I only have pics of the Walnut. Here it is.

No, the Walnut dash split in the heat, but I think maybe I didn't do a great job of sealing the back. There was a lot of routering involved in getting it to fit into the dash opening.
The Red Oak has been in there for about 6 years now without splitting, warping or anything. If you want I'll post a pic of the back.

On the upper left one you can see where the Walnut split. On the oak, I coated the back with polyurethane too and its held up much better.

I own a cabinet shop and we make all kinds of things. and stain/finish all our projects . I would recommend if you make the cluster with sold lumber (of any kind ) after machining it seal it front&back this will help with warping. wood will crack/spilt when it is under pressure or from being to dry. one of the pics shows the back of the cluster with no finish. have fun! cheers, Pat
