Timing Question

1972 chevy 350 stock with a RV cam, HEI, and 5000 miles. I was told to set timing at 8 degrees but it has no power there I went to 12 but still not good. Could I be a tooth off on the distributor?? What is a good set point for timing??/ Also just installed new 1406 edelbrock.

Re: Timing Question

between 8-12 on stock motor for initial timing (vac. adv. plugged)

Put #1 piston at TDC compression stroke (blows your finger off hole) drop in dizzy so that rotor is pointing at #1 sparkplug wire tower

If you can time it with a light to a specific degree and the vacuum cannsiter is not bumping into something.....you cannot be "a tooth off". All that one tooth can do is change the relative position of the housing at any given degree of advance.

Re: Timing Question

What "RV" cam?

"RV" is too universal when it comes to decribing a cam.

Re: Timing Question

It's more likely the advance mechanism causing lack of power than the initial timing. There's a long-winded but accurate post linked below that is the right place to start.

Then you can take a look at the carb...although since you just installed it it's worth checking right away that the butterflies are vertical at full throttle from the pedal.

Re: Timing Question

Ok you are all correct. The timing was way advanced. I was checking with vac advance connected. Its running OK now just a little rough at first acceleration. Some more carb adjusting will fix that. Sorry about the RV cam term. Will check into that. Once again this forum has come through for me. Thanks

This post is a sticky at the top of the engine forum.
