My Build: Home Depot Machine

I just wanted to start a build thread to keep me motivated on this project.

Here is the quick low down on the truck:
1965 C10 long bed fleet side
350 V8
3-spd manual (that I can't get the clutch unfrozen)

cost me $500

Plans are to keep it a truck, no show paint, no show interior, a little bit of rat rod, a little bit of Kustom, and some aggressive tire and wheel fitment. (No sunken in wheels here). I plan on using it; towing my M3 race car, going to Home Depot for the house, maybe Bed, Bath, and Beyond.......I don't know, I don't know if we will have enough time!

Seriously though here is the breakdown:

Suspension plans:
Modified crossmember
notched rear
dropped spindles and disc breaks
air ride with non fast bags ( i would like a 2 sec min drop rate)

Engine:
black/brass/copper
383 stroker kit
thumpr cam
spintech xl's with x pipe
air gap intake
600 carb
700R4 transmission
copper plated valve covers and air cleaner
polished copper rad top
coolant lines will be hard and copper with flex couplers at mounting points
can I plate a carb???

Exterior:
soda blasted then POR and probably flat black for now
would like to go with flat seafoam green OEM color later
cab to be painted white with heavy flakes and glossy

Interior:
white/black/brass
Tall shifter on the floor
brass knuckle shift nob
flat black dash w pinstriping and brass bottle opener
diamond pleated white vinyl seats

parts ordered. I am going to have the brass knuckles machined and tapped to fit the lokar nostalgia shifter

so now I need to get a working transmission in the truck and add some mufflers and then once its moving I will focus on the air ride and disc brakes

The clutch is easy. Crawl under and take off the bellhousing bottom cover. Turn the flywheel so you can see the edge of the clutch disc. Now have a helper hold down the pedal so you can see which side of the disc is sticking. Carefully work a thin blade (like a putty knife) between the disc and flywheel or pressure plate, depending on which side is stuck. You may have to turn the flywheel so you can get in from a couple of different places.

There is an alternate method which requires three feet. Start the engine in neutral and let it warm up. Shut it down, get the truck pointed in a safe direction, put the transmission in gear, and start the engine again. Then hold down the clutch pedal and step on both the brake and gas at the same time to see if it will break free.

Update:

Sorry, no pics, but.......I just ordered the following.
2.5" dropped spindles
4 2600 dominator bags
Weld in brackets
Weld in notch and bridge kit
3" lowering blocks
relocation battery box
All new Moog supension bushings rear trailing arm, upper lower ball joints.
Manual rack and pinion steering rack.
Disk brake kit


I do need to know where I can get control arm bushings...I heard to stay away from poly since they squeak. Who sells the rubber control arm bushings but not the entire shaft which is $150 per side.

Truck is off to the fabricators on Sat. for work to begin. should be 7-8 weeks it will be soda blasted. All new body mounts, primed and laying frame.

Classic parts has lower control arms for $29.95 each, or just the bushings for $11.95. Upper control arms for $24.95 but no upper bushings by themselves. I bought mine from them for my '66 lwb. Good luck on your build, it looks like you've got a great truck to start.

Truck is soda blasted!
Parts are in!
Bags, compressors, brackets, C-notch, new suspension bushings, Disc brakes in the front, dropped
spindles, basically everything needed to lay frame!!! Fabricator is installing everthing as we speak

Switched things up, now I am running Brass knuckles as the ebrake handle, Gen WWII grenade as shift knob, brass dash bottle opener is still in.
Truck is going to have 17" chrome smoothes with white wall tires to keep with modern/old school look.

Ok guys, I have been extremely busy. I am a structural engineer and this VA earthquake and hurricane rains have me swamped. The fabricator hasnt worked on it, he had surgery and then took a goverment job welding, so now he is finally working on it. He says if it isnt done by oct 31st its free!

I picked up a rebuild 91 350 SBC with 600 carb and rpm performer intake, prob going to order the hooker headers that porterbuilt recommends.

So I did get a new rebuild 700r4, shift kit and 2500 stall. I need to decide Lokar 23" or 32" nostalgia


I have the bench seat at an upholstery shop getting stitched white 3" diamonds!!

I have a few questions though.
Do I need to upgrade the stock fuel pump for a 600 carb and mild 350 setup? What is a good cam for a nice lopey idle. I am not after power, I have looked at the thumpr, the xe274 and voodoo series. Should I do tappet or hydraulic?

Also the 12 bolt rear end, does anyone know what the stock gear ratio is?

On the fuel pump, what carb? Edelbrock carbs work horribly with anything over 5-5.5lbs pressure. Some carbs might like more but probably not necessary for 600cfm and a mild 350

On the cam, if you want the lope, that's what the thumpr is for

And on the rear, there is a stamping on the top of the rear axle or open up the rear and look at the code or count the teeth.

yes a 650 cfm edelbrock carb, I want to know if stock is sufficient of if I need to upgrade to the edelbrock pump

Stock should be fine. The funny thing with the edelbrock pump is from my experience it puts 7-8lbs pressure out which floods edelbrock carbs....doesn't make much sense to me...

Took the day off of work to finish my motor refresh. A complete gasket overhaul from Fel-Pro's top of the line series, really nice stuff!! The T-40 broke on me so I could not remove the PS pump or alternator. They will be removed Sunday and replaced with Gilmer drive and a low alternator relocation bracket.

why copper?
well because I have been polishing my stock radiator for hours, I also want to make my rad hoses out of copper piping that is mandrel bend and then polished too!!

Little more work on the motor, finally got the right bolt off and removed power steering and alternator. Going with a short water pump, low mount alternator and gilmer drive pulley setup.


shift knob adapter is in, still waiting on 23" shift linkage, and my new dash mounted bottle opener, this was an old heater panel that goes right next to the steering wheel.
