Would you pay it?

Found a guy local to me in Northern VA with a short stepper for sale, with title. Has minimal rust, but a lot of the previous rust repair by the old owner is all covered in primer and body filler. It's just a shell, no front or back glass, no motor, no trans, was a 3 speed truck but the cross member has been hacked out. Vin and SPID match, so does the title, no inner fenders, new re pop core support and 71 grill. Does have very minimal rust...that I can see, cab corner, rockers, pass fender, cab supports, and front floor area have all been replaced. Something was done to the fire wall but I'm not sure what. I'm going to attach a link to an album with the pictures I took yesterday. He's asking 3500 OBO, what do you all think?

ok...no got it haha, now what would you pay or not pay? And 67chevyredneck why do you say to not even purchase it at any price? This isn't my first jaunt into custom cars and trucks so I'm not a novice or naive to the amount of work needed.

Because of low quality repair work. This was done very poorly and there's repairs everywhere. I would toss most of what was done already, leaving me with almost no truck.

Were the doors on it?
Sorta looks like the rocker is crooked.
That's a big concern.

Also appears that the firewall must had some rust since it looks to be replaced.

I'm a person that would rather fix the rust myself.
That way you have a better understanding that it was done too your liking.
When buying patched up metal you never know what's been welded in correctly or not.
That can make a good day go very bad in a hurry.

My older boys 67 had new rockers put on it before we got it and they were done all wrong. It was tougher too pull them off and put new ones on that i had to get them fitted rite.
it would've been much easier too just start with the rust in the begining.

No I wouldn't buy this. Too much $ too buy .
And way too much more work involved too finish and the above.

All understandable, the doors are on it, play in the hinges, one of the pictures has the bottom of the drivers door. I totally agree with the who knows whats under the primer and body filler sentiment. And probably more trouble than its worth. I appreciate it all, there was no way I'd offer near his asking price, In my head I was in the 1200-1500 range as well, if I were to pull the trigger. I'm really just in the market for a good cab so I believe I'll just pass on this and put the money back in the bank for the time being.

If you're willing to travel, $12-1500 will buy you one hell of a nice cab and doors. Good call on passing.

Once "rust repair" has been done, as stated above, it's 10x harder to remove it than the factory spot welds. I'm doing rust repair on a set of doors now, and I know if I don't do it right, it's going to be a million times harder to get the bottom door skin off again.

For sure, I'm willing to travel. Had the opportunity last year but couldn't pull the trigger because I was short on available cash with just buying my house. I keep my eye out, anything ya'll know of and want to pass along I'm open to hear about it. Thanks everyone!!

I picked up a complete 396 BB '69 where the PO had done a B- quality "restoration". Everything was there and it showed well in pictures. It needed engine work (major), but I bought it at $3500 and am pleased with my purchase.
The one you are showing us doesn't come close to the quality of what I got.
I would stay away from this one. There are many better choices out there.

I see it every year around tax time on cl.people off items at a high price.
My opinion is stash the cash and wait till the crunch is over....after the stuff dont sell that's when deals are made.
And if it's gone by then it wasn't meant too be anyway.

I think that a running drivable truck can be had for that kinda cash.

If looking for a major project, I would consider it for around $1k.

ohh I've walked away, money is back in the bank already. Dude bought it last year but is more of a 4x4 square body guy anyways, and judging by what was in his property yard, I'd agree with the 3 jacked up trucks he had. Your right midniteblues, I've been shopping stuff for way too long to not pick up on the tax time hike. That same principle applies in my field of auto mechanics, people nickle and dime and scrape to keep their car going and then tax refunds hit and the shop is so busy you can't keep up. I already have one c-10 blown apart I've got most of the body panels for, and all are OE no re pop crap. Just keeping my eyes open for a cab that doesn't need 3000 hours of body work like my current one does.

Why I would steer clear of it for is no matter how well that rust repair was done, it is only primed and the repair areas exposed to water that started the rust back up and seeping out. It will rust back out quite quickly. Basically the guy wasting his time repairing by not protecting it in that state. It needs to go backwards again before being a good truck ahead.

That rig has a few parts you could snag like the frame and a few other goodies. But as a whole it's not worth the dirt it sits on.

I sencond this. It looks like they threw it together to sell it. You would be cutting all their work out and starting over. It's a $500 truck the way it sits.

I agree with all above. Stay far away from this "gem". Thick primer covers a lot of cobbled body work.
If it's local, show him $500 cash. If he says no, give him your number, say thanks for your time, and walk away. He may call you back after his wife starts getting on his case about selling it.
