Van tilt question
What years of the Chevy and GMC Vans will a tilt column from fit into a 67-72 with the normal modifications?....and what are Van tilts worth? There is several Vans at the junkyard and one or 2 is supposed to have a tilt column so I need to know what to offer and what years will even work...

Re: Van tilt question
Not sure of the years, but it run well up into the 80's. As long as it has no ignition switch on it, it'll work.

Re: Van tilt question
Look for ignition switch on the dash. For ID purposes from afar it seems the vans with the round headlights are the ones with the right columns.

Re: Van tilt question
I paid $50 for mine. It came out of a motor home with 22,000 miles on the clock so it is like brand new.

Re: Van tilt question
some yards know they are worth some coin, others don't. There's one yard that wants 100 - 150 each, but the yards I get them from only charge 25 - 35

Re: Van tilt question
I paid $75 for one at a swap meet and (of course) the guy wanted you to think it was a great deal on a truck column.I figured it was worth $75 knowing it was a van tilt.

Re: Van tilt question
Well, the junkyard was closed but a buddy has a 78 van in the weeds that has a tilt column that will work in the truck.Im trying to call him now to see what he wants for it...If the conversion goes well,I might just buy a whole bunch and convert them and sell them for project money, what do y'all think about that idea?

Re: Van tilt question
You go to a yard--and they may let you pull it for $50-$100. which can take you about an hour (go find the column, check it out, get a price, get your tools etc.) then you bring it home--clean it up, reposition the neutral safty switch, shorten the intermediate shaft and install only to find that you also need the harness adapter that converts the half moon connector ony the truck to the flat connector on the van column. You buy the converter from chevy for around $12. and you are in business. Or, you can buy an already converted Van column on the board from a seller for around $125. or so.

Re: Van tilt question
Well,I *think* at this point he is letting me have the column for free so $12-$20 in the column and I saved me some money than if I bought a real one...We have to pull the van out of the weeds with a tractor, its been sitting awhile...lol

Re: Van tilt question
There`s nothing to converting to a truck. It`s not like you`re doing something no one else can`t do in a small amount of time with a minimal amount of time. That`s why guys try to lead people to think they`re truck columns, since there were less and they go for more.
