Can i paint my gas tank black?

I was thinking about painting my gas tank black but a good friend of mine said it was a bad idea because he said that the color black absorbs heat and that could be dangerous as far as gas tanks are concerned. Any validity to his concerns or are they unwarranted?
I think they are unwarranted, but I will freely admit that I do not know everything.
