steering column loose

The column on my 84 K10 is loose where the the joint is for the tilt wheel, do I have to replace the hole column or can I get in there and replace the bad part?

Re: steering column loose

Yep, its a tedious job, but it is definitely fixable.

I disagree with the guy who did the write up--which is top notch by the way. I just did this over the weekend and I went ahead and tore down far enough to get all FOUR of the bolts squared away, not just the two that are "easy" to get to.

I figured I had already invested that much time and effort, there was no reason to not fix it correctly and completely.

Re: steering column loose

A couple more FYI's

don't let any of the screws fall into the column, or you'll wind up having to tear it down further

as previously said try to get all four. The last one I did I only got the two tightened down and I'm not sure but I think it still feels loose

on loctight - there is red and blue. One is for locking the treads forever, the other locks it till force is applied. A tech I worked with years ago said that if you want to make enemies, lock it for good. I use the blue stuff and it seems to work good

also I fought with the high beam switch for about an hour till I figured it out.

Best piece of advice - take your time and look at everything as it comes out.

Lastly, good luck!

Re: steering column loose

Depends on the purpose of the truck
500 or more is a lot to drop in for a daily driver

the stock column will take time and will basicly cost nothing in the end to fix

if you still don't feel comfortable with doing it, you may just need to find a replacement column and put it in. Finding one on cl or in a junk yard will be way cheaper than ididit or flaming river.

Cool I'll keep an eye out on CL, now if I can just find one that is for a 4spd.
