im sure we all had a problem like this before?

ok the problem is my alternator being aligned for the bottom pulley.
i got a gilmer pulley kit and i cant get the alternator to stay straight with the bottom pulley. the bolt that goes through the alternator and screws into the head on the block wont tightend up.
i thought the screw was to short so i got a longer one and it still wouldnt tightend up.
it seems if it has been cross threated?
has anyone ever had this problem and is there a way i can solve this?

You need a helicoil set. This will replace the stripped threads.

http://www.emhart.com/products/helicoil.asp

Go to your local parts store and they should have it. Take the correct size bolt with you.

AZ should have them. Just tell them you stripped the thread in one of your heads and need a helicoil.

They should have them at the "Zone". Just ask for a Helicoil set for the size bolt that you need. You will clean out the old threads with the right size drill bit, cut threads for the coil, install the coil, and bolt your alternator back up with the original bolt.

Tell them you want a heela coil kit for 3/8 coarse thread. It comes with all the nessesities except a drill & bits. It includes directions.

Re: im sure we all had a problem like this before?

Another possibility. Some of the big trucks heads used 7/16 bolts (one size larger). Check the rest of the acessory holes in the head to see if they might be the arger size. If so you will need to get a 7/16 bolt & drill the hole in the alt out.

Re: im sure we all had a problem like this before?

Is this on the passenger side or driver's side?

I don't see how it could point down and not run perpendicular to the bottom pulley if it is on the driver's side.

If it is on th pass side, you may have the top tab on the wrong side of the upper bracket or may need a spacer.

Pics would definitely help.

Re: im sure we all had a problem like this before?

Is this what your set up looks like? My thoughts are that you may be mixing/matching short water pump stuff with long water pump stuff and vice versa. That could be why it's not lining up.

Edit: Whoops, forgot pic!

Do you have a long or short water pump?

Passenger side requires a long pump, DS short pump.

Re: im sure we all had a problem like this before?

What kind of cylinder heads are you running?
Stock ones, your problem sounds like a bracket issue. But I will wait for your pics.

Vortec heads? If so, then stock style bracketry will not line up right with out doing some work on them. (Assuming you are running mostly stock stuff around them, again I will wait for the pics to really know for sure).

Re: im sure we all had a problem like this before?

i got stock head and im pretty sure a long water pump.
as u can see in the pics the alternator is a little off.
and is causing the belt to move and rub at the end of the alternator pulley and it causes the pulley to tear.
the belt is supose to stay in one stop closer the the alternator fan but instead it moves over to the right causeing it to rub!

Re: im sure we all had a problem like this before?

Put a washer on the back side of the bolt that is in the last pic. Between chrome spacer and block. Should help pull nose of alt up.

Re: im sure we all had a problem like this before?

Sorry not last pic, next to the last. The one you have labeled altr006. The washer would extend the length of the spacer. Ie..move the bottom of the alt out. Tilting the alt up when everything is tight.

Re: im sure we all had a problem like this before?

Hope it helps. Cant really tell by pics if you have a spacer between water pump and top mount. If you do, you can try and remove it and see it that helps. That will move the top of alt back. Also, you have a loose bolt in your intake. Lol. When trying all of these spacer movements. Make sure you still have plenty of thread engagement. May have to use longer bolts so they dont pull from engine vibration.

You could try adding a couple of washers where the bracket attaches to the water pump to try and tip it away a little. You may not like this though, but what you really may need to do is buy a different alternator mounting bracket or system. That one just looks like it is going to continue causing problems. Good luck getting it lined up.

Re: im sure we all had a problem like this before?

How tight are you getting the belt? Not so tight that you are torquing the alt around with the belt. It that all there is to bracket? Looks kinda flimsy for the belt that it is using. Try loosening the belt a bit and see if that helps. To get rid of the twist in. Let us know.
