c10 radio upgrade

Hi,

I want to upgrade my radio to something more current and have been looking at what Truck Shop and LMC carries. I'd like an am/fm with an ipod (aux) connector and do NOT want/need cassette or cd. Can anyone recommend those in Truck Shop and LMC as good quality and/or have other suggestions.

Thx

Scott

Re: c10 radio upgrade

You could stick with an original am radio and have it converted to am/fm with ipod conection and even bluetooth. Its pretty slick .

Re: c10 radio upgrade

Thx for the reply and sorry my original question was not clear. That is, I do not have a radio now and need to get an aftermarket model. I also am going to be installing a sound system with amp and speakers, meaning I don't think the original 1972 radio technology would have the RMS, THD, etc. I'd want.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

Thx

Re: c10 radio upgrade

I bought the retro sound radio recently. I really like it. It allows usb, 1/8" pin connection, and Bluetooth streaming from my IPhone. I get in, turn on the key, it picks up my phone and starts playing. I never have to touch it or my phone. Just hop in and go.

It also doesn't require any dash modification which was a plus. It has connections on the back for auto antenna, and three amps (front, rear, and sub). It also comes with all the typical technology in today's radios while maintaining the old style look.

This is the guy I bought from. He has excellent customer service. The picture looked like it had chrome center knobs when in fact they were just black. I called him and he sent me a set of chrome center knobs. Was very pleasant to talk to.

I've seen some good reviews on this vendor here.

It really depends on your budget. The retro sounds and the like get fairly poor reviews consistently, not just from this board, but for just about any make or model they design them for. I personally love the design of them, and think i'm going to purchase one regardless. I figure worst case is it breaks, and instead of returning it i'll have it gone through at a local shop with some quality components. There are people who have had faultless operation with them for years. Best of luck with your decision, I always watch the "radio" threads closely.

You don't need a head unit. Hook amp up to your smartphone.

Re: c10 radio upgrade

I bought an Alpine cassette shaft unit from the late 1980's off of ebay and had it re-belted and cleaned. You can get these old units modified to add an iPod connection but I did not elect to go that route since I have tons of albums and a good quality cassette recorder. Those old Japanese made Alpines sound great, especially teamed up with a good vintage amp.

Yea. I'll pop some on the way to work in the morning and post them when I get to work.

Re: c10 radio upgrade

Damn that's sharp! So the display is completely black until the unit comes on? And it has different colors you can change?

Re: c10 radio upgrade

Yea. It has tons of colors for the display. It will even cycle through the colors if you don't want to choose one color. It also comes with some screen protectors that have the old AM style numbers on it, so when its off it looks like an old radio. I didn't put those on mine. I honestly have no complaints about it yet. I just ordered two amps from Sonic to install this weekend. So hopefully by Monday it will be even better. lol

You can't really tell the pictures are so dark, but the surround is chrome and the body is black. You can order many combinations of chrome and black to fit your personal preference. I have a set of buttons that I haven't installed yet, because I keep forgetting, that have chrome centers matching the windshield wiper/light switches.

Re: c10 radio upgrade

Nice! So you just tell the guy on eBay what color combo you would like?

Re: c10 radio upgrade

You could probably do that. I think the normal way is to look through all of his auctions to find the combinations you want and buy it that way. The guy was really nice. I'm sure if you can't find exactly what you want he would be willing to create a custom auction just for you.
