looking for NP205 rebuild kit

I know many of you have been through your trucks from cleaning them up to complete restoration rebuilds.
Did you buy a kit and where or just the outer seals?

Re: looking for NP205 rebuild kit

Of the many 205's I have taken apart.. I have not run across any that needed internal bearings,
unless its been run out of oil, about the only things needed are the seals and maybe a new bearing in the adapter/coupler between the trans and transfer case..

Re: looking for NP205 rebuild kit

I bring this back up because after months of a ringing phone with no answer, I now get a no longer in service for Northwest Fab.
And, I cannot find tparts+ anywhere on ebay as a store, vendor or otherwise.

Anyone else buy the seal and gasket set from any other source?

Re: looking for NP205 rebuild kit

I was talking to the guys @ Northwest Fab last week, maybe you're catching them at the wrong time ? Another good place is Drivetrain.com, talked to them yesterday and are very knowledgable, prices and very good and good stock.

Re: looking for NP205 rebuild kit

I've found NP205 master overhaul kits (bearings, seals, small parts) on hand at bearing sales stores. No shipping. Also cheaper than auto parts stores.

I'd bet NAPA, O'Reilly, Autozone, etc can obtain kits, too.

Re: looking for NP205 rebuild kit

I am doing a restoration and the internals worked pefectly before it was pulled so I am in agreement that the guts are fine and the only thing needed would be the paper gaskets and seals.
I wrote 250 area code but dialed 205. Guess I had a lot on my mind and went to 205 by mistake. I'm stupid sometimes. And we all know, you can't fix stupid.
Next will be to locate the correct paint color. I know it has been discussed on here before. I will do a search. The plan is to have the t-case done this week and move to the tranny.
I am building parts inventory for the rear end rebuild and disc swap. The remaining parts should be here next week for that.
Thanks guys.

Re: looking for NP205 rebuild kit

my 205 has over 200k miles on it. When I swap to the sm465 I plan to reseal and paint the 205, I doubt they ever need rebuilt unless they have been run low on fluid. And I bet unless you get Timkin bearings, the bearings that come in the kit aren't as good as what's already in there.

Re: looking for NP205 rebuild kit

Finally got through to Northwest Fab today. (helps when you dial the right number)
Got three busy signals, two messages that the mailbox was full and I needed to enter an access code(?) and then at 4:49PM Central time, a person.
My kit is on the way.
Thanks to all who responded to this request.
Next week the transfer case will be done.
Tranny next.

Re: looking for NP205 rebuild kit

No. Never saw any billet covers. This will be a stock rebuild. I am trying to keep all driveline stock looking.
The engine has all mods internal except for the Corvette manifolds and Edelbrock intake.
Frame is galvanized. The rest will look like a 72.

Re: looking for NP205 rebuild kit

Well, things did not go as planned. The kit got lost and finally arrived after weeks of chasing down.
Final question.
The case is apart. In the kit, which was opened when it arrived and no papers inside for details, there are three (3) rubber gear looking pieces. I have not seen anything like them in the teardown.
What are they? The kit does say NP205 on the printed label but nothing more.
And I do not see anything about them in the exploded views.

Re: looking for NP205 rebuild kit

Like a spline washer dealio? Slide the front/rear output yoke's on. 'Install rubber spline washer. Engage the seal splines with the yoke slines and push into the yoke'. Then flat washer/nut. Third one might be if you're divorced...

Bill.

Re: looking for NP205 rebuild kit

Well, the case is back together and ready for paint.
The kit contained 3 seals that are just alike and are not the seals that I needed. The 3 rubber rings are also still a puzzle. I had to buy the correct seals.
Here is a pic of the 3 rubber parts. Anyone know what they are?

Re: looking for NP205 rebuild kit

Well the 'rubber rings' look exactly like the 'spline washers/spline seals' I talked about. Three identical seals could be adapter coupler, (?) you use three there. Sometimes they put two seals on the rear output as well, but that doesn't account for the third. Three different sizes there as well. Might pay to slip the spline seals in?

Re: looking for NP205 rebuild kit

You are talking the fine spline coupler between the tranny and transfer? The fine saw tooth look would possibly fit there but the input and output shafts are big splines. I will look closer.
Wish there was some instruction with this. Thanks for your help.

Re: looking for NP205 rebuild kit

I was talking about the input/output yoke splines. There is meant to be a rubber spline washer in there before you put the washer and nut on. I would say if they don't fit (you have to 'engage them' in the spline) then they have sent the wrong ones. To be right they would obviously need to be the right diameter with the right spline count.
No spline washer in/on the tranny/transfer case coupler, but on the input shaft on the tansfer case (that the coupler slides onto) there is a rubber O ring on the shaft that the coupler slides up against. (Well mine did anyway).

Yell out if you need any more details.

Bill.
