Former Steve McQueen Vic Hickey-Prepped Truck

Does anyone have any information about this truck that surfaced for the 40th Reunion this year at Baja? Supposedly it was prepared by Vic Hickey for Steve McQueen and then literally disappeared until now.

Thanks!

Re: Former Steve McQueen Vic Hickey-Prepped Truck

Didn't Mickey Thompson built a '72 race truck for the Baja 1000? Seems like I remember one. It may have been for S.C.O.R.E. racing....don't remember for sure.

Re: Former Steve McQueen Vic Hickey-Prepped Truck

While I did not have much success uploading the photos, I did manage to find a site that covered the race and posted photos of the truck. Try the following link to see the actual truck in question:

http://race.off-road.com/race/articl....jsp?id=471878

I hope this helps.

Re: Former Steve McQueen Vic Hickey-Prepped Truck

Say's it's a 72 but looks like a 69 or 70 to me..I'd think it was just a grill swapped truck but it has the bowtie on the hood and the 4 wheel drive emblems 71-72s didn't have.
Quote:
As with many race vehicles of the early days, this 1972 Chevy truck was lost and spent time as a farm vehicle. Built by Vic Hickey and owned at one time by Steve McQueen, the truck was found in 1985 and restored by Ron Johnson. This truck represents the first factory effort by Chevrolet in off road racing. It has13,000 original miles and it still wears the original paint and wheels.

Pretty cool. I bet that truck doesn't see to many miles. I like to have it in my garage.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Former Steve McQueen Vic Hickey-Prepped Truck

Any connection to Mc Queen would have to be well documented.
There's a picture of the exotic custom built vehicle that he raced at Baja in my second link above and it ain't no '72 Chevy.
Here's a list of a few other cars he had;
Porsche 917, Porsche 908 and Ferrari 512 race cars from the Le Mans film.
1963 Ferrari 250 Lusso Berlinetta[1]
Jaguar D-Type XKSS (Right-Hand Drive)
Porsche 356 Speedster

And a 1972 Chevy pick-up? maybe.

Re: Former Steve McQueen Vic Hickey-Prepped Truck

For anyone interested, there is a feature about the truck on page 30 in the February 2008 issue of Off-Road Adventures (www.oramagazine.com). The article contains both current and archived photos.

I read the artical in ORA, its awesome! Looks to be the real deal to me. Could you post up some pics of it on here. I'm sure everyone would love to see more of it. Had a thought on it though, you might want to do some boxing on the frame where the exhaust goes through..... I read that the other truck that was built bit the dust when it broke there. I'd hate to see that happen to this sweet truck. Congrats on the find and welcome to the board!

yea the sister truck died when the frame broke, The race shop boxed the frame on this truck when it was built, i have to leave the frame and chassis like this, Iam taking the truck to the Petersom Museum soon for a 6 month display, i will post some photos of the truck when i found it and had it in Baja Mexico a few monthes ago, I see that you have a Blazer, Did you know Vic Hickey who built this truck in 1968 for racing later that year started on a new project in his Ventura Californis shop, He built the first k5 blazer for GM then raced them in baja, Ron

Welcome to the board! Sounds like you have quite the collection going as well. I would love to see some more of those vintage pics. This is the only Hickey image that I have saved.

WOW! Great stuff! These trucks are great by themselves, but owning one with that kind of pedigree and history is awesome!

This is an amazing post! Another boardmember pointed me to this post after I posted in the 4x4 subforum about the article in ORA about your truck. So very cool that you are the current owner. I applaude you for keeping the truck as it was!!!

Re: Former Steve McQueen Vic Hickey-Prepped Truck

I read the article I thought it was CarCraft or HotRod, but I also read the ORA, so not sure but I read the article, way cool truck with super low miles and lots of COPO options. You found it behind a tire store, right? Then went back after you found out the history and asked the owner if he still had the motor and he did?! Very cool stuff, things like this prove I was born a bout 10-15 years too late!!
