68 shortbed frame up rebuild (dropping it) - pics, lots of them!!!
This was my daily driver from senior year in high school to senior year of college. Two weeks before my graduation, my rear end got burned up, leaked a little too much fluid through the axle seal and got red hot. Parked it for 2.5 years in my back yard since I bought a new car to get me around. Managed to get my credit cards paid off so I thought I would reward myself by fixing up the old beast.
The rear end has brand new mosler axles 6 lug, limited slip, 3.73 gears. Got a 700R4 with a B&M stage 2 shift kit sending the power. Going to rebuild my 350 with high performance parts. comp cam, roller lifters, bigger valves on the heads, air gap intake, msd hei distributor, taylor wires, headman headers, eldebrock 650 cfm 4 barrel. Everything is going to be electric. i installed a painless wire harness a year before the rear end died on me, best thing i ever installed on the truck. Going to be replacing the drums all around with disc all around. I have had to many scary moments when i hit the brakes and i dont slow down. i nearly pooped myself when the traffic ahead on me on the highway came to a stop but i didnt. some people driving toyotas know what im talking about. Going to be taking pics throughout the whole project for your viewing pleasure. Here are some pics of my truck from a few years back http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...05#post3847205 3.9.10 - removed painless wire harness 3.10.10 - removed front clip 3.11.10 - removed bed Last edited by SATownChevy; 03-17-2010 at 09:02 PM. |

Re: 68 shortbed frame up rebuild (dropping it) - pics
painless wire harness, kinda want to save them. yea i didnt use those wire twist ties to make it look all nice and clean. The cool part about painless is that they are marked every 12 inches so no matter what, I know what each wire goes to.
That hood hinge is a little pricey but I like it. on their website right now.

Re: 68 shortbed frame up rebuild (dropping it) - pics
thanks for the support guys.
yea i got pretty lucky with only having just a bit of surface rust and not too much of the bad stuff, the kind where you can see through it. im a member of the blue sky garage alright, rained all last night so i hope my truck made it. if you take a closer look at the 2nd pic from the top, i will be moving into that corner area behind the white tow truck. its a buddies shop so i get to use all the cool tools that make life easier. plasma cutters, air guns, welders, more air tools. i only get to work on it after work for a few hours each day before i have to go home and spend time with the wife. dont want to make her mad and have her take away my play time. im going to go with a chromed out engine bay that i hope will be really clean. disc brakes all around, tube a arms along with air bags all around. also got the dakota digital gauges which will be awesome. i got lots of parts in the mail and i hope i can get them on the truck as soon as possible.

Re: 68 shortbed frame up rebuild (dropping it) - pics
yea its a pretty clean frame, after looking at some of the other trucks on the forum, i am very lucky. im going to start cleaning up the frame. i know that is going to take awhile. The lift came in handy for sure.
The color on it I think is called 'racing blue' from a honda civic. When i got it painted, i just opened up the color book and picked the first thing that looked good. it has a little bit of pearl in it but it tends to look purple in low light conditions.

Re: 68 shortbed frame up rebuild (dropping it) - pics
did more work on the frame this weekend. hit it up with 6 cans of oven cleaner then the high pressure washer. today i got on it with the 4 in wire wheel getting the old paint and rust spots. Just waiting on my airbags and control arms to come in so I can get them installed so I know what to cut on the frame, little c notch, big c notch or no notch at all.
ok enough of my ramble, here are the pics pulled the spring to see how it will look and i also came across some stamps on the frame.
