stock three spd transmision rebuild

Hi everyone
i am looking for information about rebuilding my stock transmission in my 62 chevy, i was told it a saginaw, two months ago i took it out and took it to a transmission guy locally and he looked inside the transmission from the side cover and we determined that the gears were great , and we would just reseal the tranny and focus on the linkage, trying to pin point why my tranny will not stay in second gear, i bought new bushing for linkage ect ect and still i have to hold it up in second gear and easy on the engine torque as to not force it out, i dont want to drive it like this, i did adjust my linkage and it is a close to perfect as it can be, without any lock ups between shifting ect. i can find anyone locally who would want to tear it down and totally rebuild it so i will do it myself, i just need a book on it and a kit , can anyone help.

thanks alot
jeff

Re: stock three spd transmision rebuild

There was two 3 speed transmissions, a light duty GM 3 speed and a heavy duty 3 speed built by Warner. It is common for the linkages to wear out and cause trouble.Used linkages will be just as worn.It would be a good time to replace the unsynronized(1st gear) 3 speed with a sm420 4 speed, only modification would be a longer driveshaft and hole in floor board.

Re: stock three spd transmision rebuild

let me just ask this question, when we use the term three on the tree are we saying its a three speed ( three forward gears) plus reverse. or is this tranny a four speed and reverse counts as fourth?
thanks
jeff

Re: stock three spd transmision rebuild

Only the forward gears count, so a 3 on the tree is a 3 speed.

Re: stock three spd transmision rebuild

ditto with a 4-speed...four forward gears, plus reverse = 4-speed.

Re: stock three spd transmision rebuild

I have the original 3 speed transmission out of my 62. It has been rebuilt, painted, and still on the engine stand. Have the 3 speed columb shifter as well.

This data is related to the 66 and later Saginaw 3-speed, which is all-synchro and much larger than the 65 and earlier Saginaw 3-speed, which is non-synchro on first and very small.
