tranny question (need help)

will running your motor at an idle in the drive way, not driving it, burn out your transmission if it doesnt have enough fuild in it? both my buddy done the street has had an issue with his transmission. when he first started putting the truck together and then was able to get the truck running he would start is up and let it run, once forgetting to take the truck out of drive and running it into the wall of his garage. fast forward he got is complete enough to try to drive it, he filled it up with fuild and started it and put it into drive but nothing happen. so we though he had burned it up. so he got another used trans that his buddy told him it was a good tranny and he put it into the truck this weekend. then he filled it up with fuild and the same thing happen again, no movement at all. so the question is what are we forgetting to do? what should we look for?

Re: tranny question (need help)

Sorry, this post will not be of any help to you, but this thread was right below the thread titled "Other help for dating" and it just didn't look right to me, so I'm moving this one to the top.

Re: tranny question (need help)

Not enough fluid or possably broke the pump by not having the converter in all the way. Check to see if the pump is working by checking the fluid level with the engine not running, should read over full an inch or more. Start the engine and check again, fliud level should drop to near the full mark. If it drops the pump is working, could be the converter itself. If it doesn't drop, probably broke the pump. If it was run long enough without enough fluid, it could have ruined the pump.
