Hi there. I've got an '86 chevy stepside, with a GM 350.The truck is used as my daily driver, mostly around town(hardly any highway miles). I also plow my driveway with it. I'm looking to buy a new carb and probably intake too, and would appreciate any feedback you can give me. I was looking at edelbrock, but what size is good for my setup(mostly stock i suppose). I'm guessing either 600 or 650 cfm?
What are some of you guys running for carbs/intakes???

I'm running an Edelbrock 1405 on my 78 stepside 2WD. The 1405 is a manual choke 600 CFM. I think it's just right.

Stick with the Quadrajet, and get is rebuilt by a reputable shop. I had a local guy up here rebuild mine, and tweek it for towing for $300 can. cash.

A new carb will set you back around $500-$600 for a genaric quadrajet. The one you have on your truck is the proper one for that truck...so keep it, and rebuild it

I'm running a factory aluminum intake on a 406 with a Quadrajet that I tuned to the engine. At one time or another I've run about every popular carb setup imaginable; I've concluded that noting beats a properly tuned Quadrajet.

i have the aluminum edelbrock performer eps intake (LOVE IT) and the holley 750 cfm carb with electric choke on my 350. Little bit too much carb for it, so i ended up changing the jets down a little. now- NO problems whatsoever.

you can buy a rebuilt q-jet from Autozone for about $280.

That sounds like a damn good price, kinda tempting even to me, and my Holley seems to be running quite alright

To the original poster - for a low-revving 350 I'd personally choose a 470cfm Holley Truck Avenger, a 600cfm carb ain't necessary on a 350 untill you hit like 5500rpms, and at that point yer gas mileage will be anything but acceptable. Let's put it this way - I got a 650cfm Holley DP and I commute 25mpg of which 15 are city and 10 freeway, the only times I need to get into the secondaries is when I wanna go, and by go I mean GO!

I still never go over 4000 rpms, so I never really use the full flow of my carb - for my application a smaller carb will work better, too bad I can't afford one any time soon.

you can buy my Holley spread-bore double pumper and go race with it (no joke), and I'll get that rebuilt Q-jet and drive it to work.

of course with my luck what will most likely end up happening is that you will run like 12-13 seconds consistently and still pull near 20mpg freeway, while I fight the Q-jet day in and day out to make it idle decent and get something better than 10mph

I picked up my rebuilt E4ME Qjet from these guys 4yrs ago and she runs great,no problems with this one.

I loved my Holley 3310 when I was running it too, but I couldn't get the 406 to idle below 750 RPM. Same engine with the Quadrajet and I idle at 650 and get 17 mpg. I'll be interested to see how the Quadrajet does in my 79 at the Flashlight Drags next spring.

I don't know, but I damn near bought one last month because of the price. The only reason that I didn't is because I love to tinker with Quadrajets. I'd be interested to know how people feel about them too.

My only fear would be drilled out & pressed in jets like some rebuild houses do. I like to be able to change my jets.
