I use Mothers Aluminum polish for all my chrome and aluminum.

Then I put on a top coat of wax polish.

I have to second Casey, that stuff is awesome, find a waterless car wash salesperson and ask for the premium metal polish. I used it on some 50's soda fountain stools and it worked excellent, the chrome on the stools was all dark with 40 years of tarnish and even surface rust and that polish made the chrome literally look like new.

to put a good shine on your underhood chrome you can use the worldwide known household product called windex and it is a lot cheaper that all that other stuff, its what i use and if you have a little bit of rust on it then scrub it with coca cola then use the windex for a shine, my grandfather told me this and it works great.

I've used WD-40 on my 14" air cleaner. Takes off all the junk and leaves it shiny. May not be the best stuff or the brightest, but it works for me.

I don't know how picky you guys are, but when I saw that he used steel wool, I thought I should reply. It seems that no matter how fine the steel wool is, it will leave scratches. You might not see them right away, and they might be hard to find, but they are there, not to mention that if you use steel wool to polish the chrome every time, the chrome will get thin and show the metal underneath it. I know, I have seen it happen. A good chrome polish will have enough abrasive action to shine chrome.

use steel wool to remove the large rough area's and rust , then use a buffing wheel and compound to bring back the shine and remove the small scratches. Thats what I did when working on the '72 a few months ago. Chrome looks like new!

If you keep it clean and polished, the rust won't come back and there is no need to use abrasives on it anymore.
