modern snow plow install?

has anyone ever fit up a newer fisher or boss snowplow to a 67-72 instead of the old speedcast fishers?

Re: modern snow plow install?

Yes. I have a 2012 8' 2" boss power VXT on my 1972 3/4 ton 4x4. The boss dealer had to modify a 73 and up front mount to my truck. I used it all last winter with no problems. It can be done.

Re: modern snow plow install?

I modified '81-up Chevy full size truck Western Ultramount brackets to fit my '72 1/2 ton 4x4. I ended up rebuilding the brackets to match my factory tow hook holes in the frame horns. Our trucks are also a little shorter (1.5"?) from front spring perch to axle centerline so I had to modify the Western kicker brackets a little also.

Re: modern snow plow install?

I wouldn't put a plow on a truck that I didn't plan on taking to the crusher in a couple of years. Snow and salt destroys plow trucks in no time flat.

Salt is nasty. I only do my property (no salt); the snow is nothing to worry about.

Do you have a picture with the plow on your truck? Please post?

Re: modern snow plow install?

This is a Western mount made for an '84 GM Truck I mounted in '84. I ended up doing two trucks that way. Due to the peaked nose on a 67-72 the mount needs to slide forward a couple inches and one hole on each side was drilled. I welded a tab for a stop against the back of the mount on the frame. It was designed to sit back against the spring mount as a stop. Anything made for a square body can easily work on these trucks. I don't know about anything newer,

Re: modern snow plow install?

You've gotta check out the "chum bucket" build by 115-k10. He put a 7'-6" Fisher MM2 on his 1970 short bed. I believe he used push plates from a 73-87 with modifications. Looks awesome, I'd love to have that setup. Start around post #126, and some more pics around post #180

So this plow frame mount to your frame with only those 3 bolts on each side and the custom kick plates on each side?
Did you notch out your bumper?
How long did it take you to modify the plow frame and install?

As previously pointed out, only do your own, unsalted driveway and you'll be fine. I've plowed my driveway and the lake road (no salt there either) for years.

Re: modern snow plow install?

One of the best days of the year is when the plow comes off.

Also, if you do plow, I quit screwing around by pushing snow without chains. A set of chains on the front tires, 500 or so pounds of sand bags in the bed, and you're good to go.

Re: modern snow plow install?

Regarding mounting the plow mounts. I quit removing the piece bolted to the frame every spring. Its a PITA to get off and put on. On my mount it is bolted to the frame with 1/2" bolts. The part I call the "plow frame", the heavy metal piece that the lift cylinder is hanging from and has lights mounted on, is bolted to that piece under the truck with four 3/4" bolts, two on each side.

Now that I leave the bottom piece on putting the plow on in the fall is easy. Four big bolts to put the plow frame on, then I drive to where it is laying in the weeds. Three pins hold it to the mounting points, connect cables, and I'm ready for winter.

I should say easy after installing the hydro motor. That sits on the LHS frame rail, really close to the alternator and the wheel tub.

Remember, you are pushing snow. Not bashing in to it (unless you like breaking things). It doesn't take much to hold all that stuff together unless you are beating the crap out of it.

I would be grateful if you would post some pictures of your frame mount.
Thanks in advance!

Re: modern snow plow install?

First is what I call the plow frame. It bolts to the piece bolted to the truck frame. Two 3/4" bolts per side. It has the lights just above the picture. Sorry about cutting them off the picture.

Re: modern snow plow install?

This is a close-up of the left front of the piece I leave on the truck. Somebody welded it in place as you will see in a later picture. I cut a few notches to get wrenches in to work the bolts.

It appears a guy put 2x4" steel tubes inside the frame then welded the plate on that.

Re: modern snow plow install?

This is a picture of the left hand side taken back a few more inches. It shows how the guy welded a "V" that goes back and bolts to the frame back by the engine cradle.

You can see where the plow frame bolts to and the hole the back of the plow pins to.

Re: modern snow plow install?

This is shot where you can see where the back of the "V" bolts to.
I just realized if I put in a 700r4 and move the engine forward I may have other things to contend with.

And yes that is a blue oil pan. Over the 4th I pulled the 383 to deal with my schlecht crank shaft. That is the original 307 out of my 72 Chevelle. It got a blue paint job when it was installed in a 1977 Impala. Long story.

Re: modern snow plow install?

And finally the right hand side. The reason I think it was welded in place in the previous truck is that the guy I bought it from cut this side. I used a hunk of plate and a couple of bolts to make it removable.

Re: modern snow plow install?

I hope the pictures help. It is hard to see with it all in place.

Still one of the best things I've done for myself. My driveway was a bear to clear. Now I do it from a heated cab. And having a road on the lake to the fish house is priceless.

Re: modern snow plow install?

I purchased a 1992 half ton Silverado with a plow. Obviously the plow frame would not fit as it was.

[IMG][/IMG]

I purchased some plow push plates from 73-87 Chevy pickup.
[IMG][/IMG]

[IMG][/IMG]

We used the front portion from the 92 and the part that attaches to the truck from the 73-87. We cut them and welded together.

[IMG][/IMG]

Put a wire wheel to it then treated it with Eastwoods Fast Etch.

Only had White Epoxy so that is what we used.

Followed by a couple of coats of Satin Black
