Gear box question

I ordered a 68 steering gear box from redhead, when I pulled the one that was on the truck, I couldn't install the new one. I measured the input shaft that goes to the rag joint and came up with 25/32" for the redhead unit. The one I pulled off was 1/16"smaller.

I'm waiting for a call back from redhead. They are looking into this issue.

Anyone know what's going on here? This trucks been a puzzle trying to figure out lol. Slowly but surely.

Re: Gear box question

Im in the middle of replacing mine right now with a Redhead box as well. The input shaft should be a 13/16" 36 spline. There was no difference between two and four wheel drive input shafts so I'm not sure what yours would have been for.

Do you have a way to snap some pics and post them here? Maybe getting someone's eyes on the box they will recognize what you have.

I'm wondering if maybe they used a later gear box from a newer C-10?.... Here's some pics for you guys to see.

The two have same casting numbers including a 4 on one side and as well as the round bottom side. Thanks guys for any help.

Re: Gear box question

Very possible it is just a boxing error. What kind steering system (column and intermediate shaft) do you have?

Re: Gear box question

There are two input shaft sizes. A quick fix would be to buy the other coupler through your local parts store. I did.

Re: Gear box question

I believe the difference is the slow sector of the 72 back and the quicker sector of the 73 and later. I bought a sector for a 75 to get the quicker ratio over my 71 stock sector. Both 1/2 ton applications. I am talking about power sectors by the way.
Ghost you should turn your new sector and count the number of turns. Old box should have about 4turns lock to lock where as the newer sector should turn 3 turns lock to lock if thats what you have.

Re: Gear box question

Thanks for the replies guys!

Red head called me yesterday and was told that the smaller input shaft were used in later models (78? Forgot what year he said). They are sending me the correct one and a round trip label for the incorrect one. Great group of guys that take care of their customers. I'll check back in once new one arrives.
