Taking the bed off
this weekend wondering if ther was any tips or tricks that i need to no about, dont think there would be but hey u never no

Lots of WD-40 if your was rusted like mine.......And a good die-grinder .....

i did something nobody else has done. i took the bed off of my truck in less than 5 minutes. and dident hurt it. used a grinder and cut the bolts, the two of us lifted it off and set it on its end in less than 5 minutes. beat that!! lol im just messin with ya. good luck

If you're removing the actual bedsides from the bed floor itself, look for spot welds on the rear of the bedside connecting the floor - where a roll pan would mount. Those kinda snuck up on me as I muscled a side off, costing me a complete new side. Don't want ANYONE to make this same, very dumb and costly mistake!

just took my long fleetside off tonight,one guy on each corner took 5 mins to lift off and sat it on three 44 gallon drums,already had bolts undone though

four of us lifted it easily and walked with it ,but didnt have original timber in it so may have been lighter

I took mine off by myself... Just got some tie downs, put one in each corner and hooked up my engine hoist.. I started lifting and adjusted the tie downs as i went..

When i took mine off my 68 I had already removed the wood. most of the bolts came out but I had to cut the others and were they tough. Not sure if they are grade 8 bolts but I went through plenty of saw blades! Finally torched the last one off... Good luck.

can you change the bed wood on the truck or do you have to take off the bed ? how hard to change the wheel wells - any hidden bolts ?

well its off we ended up getting two come alongs on each side and raising it up and driving out from underneath it it went real smooth on the very back cross member u can see the numbers c1534 which i think is the code for c-10 it was pretty cool to see the factory wrightings ill post the rest on the next post

Last two times I did it by myself. Just cut the bolts, removed it. I stood it up to make the work easier on my back. Then I used a hammer to knock out the rotten wood. Once the wood was gone the bolts were revealed and cut from the side. It took an afternoon of solid work.

Somebody once asked this question if they should install the wood while the bed is off or on. The answer was (and I forgot who answered) to install the wood while the bed is ON the truck. The reason is so you can make sure the bed is squared. If all the wood is tightened down when the bed is off, there may be tweaking. This will affect your ability to match up the holes when trying to put the bed back on.
This made since to me. Somebody probably learned this the hard way. |
