lower control arm... help?

can somebody tell me how to remover the ball joint on the lower control ams? i noticed there is a metal ring on the backside but there is no way to grab ahold of it. do i need large channel locks or am i way off track???

is your year a 66 if so i think it is pressed in the ring has two small holes i think, my 62 gmc is riveted in, the ring is the top side if no holes then i would sugesst cheisel it off but make sure you new ball joint has anew snap ring with it i have replaced lower ball jointson the newer trucks 73-87 with this style of snap ring

hey stl , check out my blog. I have a section on how to remove it. I had the same problem! It took me a VERY long time before I finally got them out.

and just think... you still have to put your new ones back in!

Nice blog. There are coil spring compressors available at most auto parts supply houses, as well as online. This is a safer way to control the energy stored in the compressed coil spring. Thanks for the information.

the help i need is getting the actual ball joint off the lower control arm. i already have the entire front end apart but now i need to sandblast and paint it. another question for ya. do they sell new rubber seals for that ball joint or do i have to buy the entire assembly? thanks

I would also try your local NAPA or check their website for a replacement ball joint grease seal. If not a new ball joint may not be a bad idea.

I tried like hell to just find the rubber seal but I didnt feel comfortable with any out there. Lucky for me because once I got them out the ball joints were so dang floppy.

Ball joints are $14/piece right now at the truckandcarshop. either upper and lower and it comes complete with seal, castlenut, cotter pin, and mounting hardware to replace the rivets with bolt in.
