Help with correct auto-tilt column and 700R4 tranny
I have purchased a 700R4 tranny to install in my completely out of control 71' restoration. It seems like everything that I told my self I would skip and just get her painted and on the road has gone to the way side. Anyway...I have a new 700R4 trans and now want to purchase the best Auto-tilt column that will work well with the 700R4. Does an OEM auto-tilt work fine? Should I use and IDIDIT? Money is somewhat of an issue but putting in the best auto-tilt for the 700R4 might be more important to me. Just looking for some help here and maybe some of you guys that already have the 700R4 in place can chime in. Thanks in advance to all the great people here!!!

Any steering column will work, try to find a factory auto tilt if you want, or the van tilts can be retrofited. If you have deep pockets, a billit tilt looks real cool.

I just adjusted my stock column where it is in park. All other gears are correct. Just can't get to low 1. Well I can, it is just off the indicator.

So It sounds like a stock one will work fine...but the indicator is off the map when you shift into Low 1? I do want an Auto-Tilt but may explore the billit options??? Where's the best place to look at these? Ididit??? Thanks Guys!

If I remember right I bought the IDIDIT indicator on my 700 save your money. Didn't line up. Furthermore who ever uses 1 st gear anyway?

Hey Chevy Dude when my brother built his '71 he just bought a rebuilt truck tilt column from someone in No. Cal. worked great. Probably has less invested than I do having mine rebuillt etc. I didn't learn the first time when I bought the lens from IDIDIT and later bought another from the Truck Shop, they look nice but are irrelavent because they don't coincide with the shifting detents. I have a lens from a 350-400 trans I'm going to throw in next. I think it goes Park-Rev-Neut-Drive-L1-L2. I think it will line up with the shifting detents and am not going to worry about the unused 1st gear. I'll talk to the bro. later and find out where he bought the column from and maybe this will give you another option. Try to get this info to you later today.

I bought an auto tilt out of 70's model van. I then bought the Ididit 700R4 indicator. You will have to do some modifications to install it in the factory indicator housing, but if done right, it looks original. My truck was previously a manual truck, so I had to make the linkage to connect the column to the trans. I just made it adjustable, so once I adjusted it, all the gear line up with the indicator. You can also purchase a similar linkage kit through several street rod companies.
