? about cheyenne supers

Hi,
I have a couple of questions about cheyenne supers and I'm hoping someone here can answere them for me. First how rare are these trucks? Second is there anyway to tell if a truck is a real Cheyenne Super? Is there anything I can look for as far as mandantory options on a Cheyenne Super? Is there any place to get good information on these trucks?

The reason I'm asking is have have found one that is for sale. I'm not sure if it is a 71 or 72 but it is a 3/4 ton long bed. It has the tool box on the passanger side bed side, 400 CID emblems on the front fenders, Cheyenne Super emblems on the fenders and a automatic trans. Other wise this truck does not seem to have much for options, no A/C, tach, or anything special. It looks to have a big Olds or Buick engine in it now, I'm sure it's not a big block chevy or small block. thought I had read in the past that Cheyenne Supers are rare but I'm not sure what makes them that way. Thanks in advance for any help.

all cheyenne supers are two tone colored, have upper and lower trim, front chrome bumper, have woodgrain on the guage bezel and glovebox, stainless trim on windows and vent windows, tailgate band, chrome hubcaps, carpet, headliner, fancy door panels, chrome wiper, radio, and light knobs, and other stuff I am sure I missed.

the way to tell 71 from 72 is door panels, mirror location(71 is on roof and 72 is on windshield), and the vin. 72 has an extra c at the beginning of the vin.

I don't think that is entirely true because I have located and offered to buy an all white 1/2 ton 2wd cheyenne super with the 402 BB and I KNOW it is factory. My orange and white cheyenne super is 2 tone obviously, but the only option that white one didn't have that mine does is the sliding rear window... Also I checked the glove box sticker to make sure.....

ok, I wasn't absolutely sure, but most are two tone. It will also say on the glovebox sticket cheyenne super equipment. hope this helps

Are all the super cheyenne long beds?

Is this a true super cheyenne? I dont see the wood grain on the glove box.

that one isn't a super, just a Cheyenne.
The cheyenne or super could be ordered on any truck, short, long, longhorn, 2 wheel drive, 4 wheel drive, even on step sides. I'm not 100% sure, but I think on cab chassis trucks too.

Thanks for the help, and it does help. I thought Cheyenne Supers were suposed to be loaded models. How rare are Cheyenne Super's? Does anyone know? This truck is all green and needs a lot of work but is complete straight and rust free. It does need a new interior minor body work and paint, the thing that attracted me to it was the rust free cab and bed. I don't know how it runs or if it runs. Tomorrow I get to talk to the owner and find out what he wants for it. I know it's not an easy question to answer but any ideas on what it might be worth?

the CST, Cheyenne, Cheyenne Super, Camper special...ect, they are all just option packages. They are all just little bits of trim and bright work, some added sound deadener, nicer seats and carpeting and a couple odds and ends, with the exception of the camper one, which is nothing but a sway bar, HD shocks, HD tires, and HD springs and/or overload springs. All the added options are just that, added options. A super could be on a step side with a 25o inline and a 3 speed.

The cheyenne super is, as stated above, just a upgrade to the trim package. As far as rare go, it is the top of the line but doesn't necessarly have lots of options. I would guess that maybe 5% of the Cheyenne's were Supers! That said, I personally wouldn't pay a whole lot more for a Super unless it was a totally loaded, highly collectable original truck. You see originals in e-bay from time to time. This is NOT like a big block 63-67 matching ## Corvette!!!
Maybe $50-100. more consideration for a Super if it says it on the glove box door and is all there. The GMC version was the Sierra Grande!! My .02

I agree with Huck that the value of a Cheyenne Super is tied to other options but I disagree with the added value. An original documented Cheyenne super will garner substantially more than other trim levels. This is especially true if the truck is restored.

I just checked the production numbers for 72 , according to the book i looked at a total of 636,457 c10 -k20 model trucks were built , of which 40,636 were Cheyenne Super . Not that rare . If you want rare , buy a Longhorn . ( Mine lol ).

Can I ask where you find such information on those numbers id like to know how many of the 71's were made super?

BTW, 409biscayne do you have pics of your 72 super?

The book i use is Chevrolet Pickups 1946 - 1972 by John Gunnell , ordered from Chevy Duty along with a bunch of parts , i have no idea how accurate the numbers are , but it lists 71 Super at 9867 total . I will have to post some pics of my trucks , the kids are home for Christmas and they have digi cameras . My 72 is apart , waiting on a cab corner / frame shortening . Later.

409 , If your numbers are correct for 72 then only about 6% of the trucks were Cheyenne Supers. What was the total production of trucks for 71? if only 9867 Cheyenne Supers were made in 71 they must be unusual. I do have another question for someone in the know. The truck I'm looking as has 400 emblems on the side of it. Did chevy ever put a 400 small block in these trucks? If not then this must have had a 402 big block in it unless the emblems/fenders have been changed.

chevy NEVER put 400 small blocks in 67-72 pickups. They badged all 402 trucks as 400. Hope this helps

That is correct. In trucks, they called the 402 a 400, and in most cars, they called the 402 a 396 becouse of the performance immage the 396 already had for it's self. however, inner corporate politics would not let a small block be bigger than a big block. (400 small block.... 396 big block)

Interesting numbers on Super production. The number of 2 wheel drive short box fleet (115 inch) produced in 1972 were 39,730. If 6% were Supers that would make 2,384 shortbox Supers in 1972. The percentage of Supers being shortbox fleetsides is probably higher but it shows there wasn't that many made. These tend to have the most value. The facts I have also show there were 6,069 shortbox fleetside 4X4's made in 1972. If I applied the 6% figure that would make 365 Super shortbox fleetside 4X4's made in 1972. The percentage of shortbox 4X4 with the super option is probably less than 6%. Makes my 72 a fairly "rare" truck (what ever that means).

Thanks everyone, The thing that got me wondering was I have seen numerous Cheyenne's, but only a few Super's. I have also seen quite a few camper specials and know of two maybe three longhorns for sale unless they have been sold is the last few months. I would really like to find a short bed but they are hard to find and seem expensive when I do. I do know of a 67 4X4 long bed for sale but I don't know what kind of shape it is in. It was kind of disapointing as I went to meet the guy who had the Cheyenne Super for sale and he did not show, oh well I'll try to get ahold of him later. thanks again for all the help

To add:The CheyenneSuper is the top-of-the-line model platform.To find the truck you want in that trim is the rat`s asz if a fully loaded or all trimmed-out truck is what you want.They are potentially the most valueable originals.
But,some don`t want all that trim.It adds to the cost of a resto.And,it`s possible to have a lower level truck with way more options.No trim level "includes" any of the "rare" or highly sought after options.
To some,finding the actual model design is more important.Like a Longhorn,short or long Stepside 4wd,or 9`C/30 Stepside...

I'd venture to say that there are more 72 Cheyenne Super short beds on the road today and then GM ever built.

I know I've made 2 myself. Vendors sell the emblems, and Home Depot sells drill bits. Know what I mean?

My title doesnt say " Super" but the SPID on the glove box does , as does the build sheet , code ye9 , also z84 custom sport trk , ofcourse after i add the big block and shorten the box it wont be "correct" either , but it will be the way i want it . I have a question : When i was looking at the build list i noticed it had option code G66 Air lift Rr Shocks , ive never had that before , were they uncommon ?

Does anyone have any documentation on what, exactly, was in the Cheyenne package and then the Super package? I have always used the cargo lamp option on the back of the cab as a quick external way to tell a Cheyenne or Super. I am pretty sure it was part of the packages. It was available by itself, but I believe to be a real Cheyenne or Super, it has to have that cargo lamp. Is this right?

That is correct. Starting in 69, all CST trucks, later called Cheyenne in 71, had the cargo light...and it was in fact an option on it's own.
A quick way to tell a true CST/Cheyenne, is looking for a headliner. You could not get it without CST/Cheyenne...and naturally, the super would have it too.
As for what is included in a cheyenne and a super.....
in 1972, a Cheyenne had included.... (this is per GM restoration manual... not a book written later... this is dealer info from 71)
Stepside pickups
Full depth foam seat with delux vynal trim
carpeting
door trim panels
chromed front bumper
Cigar lighter
Headliner
Cargo lamp
Bright condtrol knobs and pedal trim, rear window trim,wing vent trim,and windshield moulding trim
Cheyenne fender name plates
Bright side marker lampsDoor operated dome light switches
special insulation.
Fleetsides or Longhorn models, add...
lower body side mouldings with wood grain inserts
Wood grain tailgate panel
Tail light trim
Bright fuel filler cap.


For the Super Add
step side pick up...
