Making preparations to pull motor.

I decided to pull the motor on my 71 to replace the pan gasket (pan is loose, but can’t get it out). I will need to jack up the block to get the pan off which requires the mounts to be undone anyway….the motor mounts need changing too.
So I would like a list of do’s and don’ts and any tricks to help me out. I never pulled a American engine before so not too sure what to do.

drain antifreeze
pull radiator
remove fan assy
disconnect all hoses
disconnect battery
remove carb linkage
remove carb... install lift plate
disconnect all wiring hei, starter, etc
disconnect alt bracket and swing to the left lower inner fender

remove bellhousing bolts
remove flex plate bolts
slide converter all the way back inside trans.
support trans with jack
remove engine mount bolts

connect lift to lift plate on intake [ pull it out]

digi photos will help on the vac lines, and bracket locations... or poor art work (drawings) will do if there's no digi cam.
Mark, you forgot to pull the hood!
fan shroud needs to come off if you still have it
Disconnect the fuel line at the fuel pump, the frame side of the line.
If you don't have a carb lift plate, then no need to buy one. They are nice, but not needed.
If you have power steering, unbolt it from the engine, and flop it over on the frame... same for a/c stuff
If the engine is original and unmolested, then there are ground straps on the valve covers to firewall, unbolt them
take your time, tripple check everything. Lift the motor a few inches, then look at everything again.

A good point is to mark the hood and hood hinges where they line up so for when you reinstall you dont have to mess around with alignment.

Disconnect your headers or your exhaust manifolds also.

How many members have their trucks scattered all over the garage that started out to tighten the fan belt. Take pictures, it might be the last time you see it in one piece.

Shouldn't have to pull the hood if the radiator is out. Have a buddy/kid/wife "ush the hood a little further up with a broom handle or get a 2x4 to hold it up a little higher - there is a little more room these old hinges flex around alot.

Make sure that you get the motor hoise hook/chain as tight as possible to give you the most clearance.


I pulled a V8 out of my 4x4 without taking out the Radiator or Pulling the hood. Just have to know how to angle the motor around. These trucks have an airport under the hood. You can basically spin the motor around 360 in there.

I’m doing this right now my engine goes back in tomorrow I edited rage's post to add stuff and change the order, as it's pretty important that it's done in a certain order. "Example: removing bell housing bolts before the flex plate bolts is dangerous to both you and the trans."

remove hood----- mark placement can be done without but it's a PITA.
Disconnect battery
Drain antifreeze
Remove fan and shroud
Pull radiator
Disconnect all hoses
Remove carb linkage
Remove kick down cable
Remove ground straps including negative battery cable to engine block
Disconnect wires to
-Distributor
-Alternator
-Oil pressure sensor
-Water temp sensor
-Choke

------Skip if you don't have A/C------
Remove trigger wire on compressor
Remove compressor-mounting bolts
DO NOT REMOVE HOSES
Remove any brackets holding hoses to engine and pull compressor with the hoses still attached to the side. Secure with a bunggy cord or wire coat hanger to keep it out of the way.

Remove starter
Remove tork converter cover
Remove flex plate bolts
Slide converter all the way back inside trans
Remove exhaust from manifolds
Remove bell-housing bolts
Support trans with jack
Connect engine lift to lift plate/chain on engine put enough pressure to take out the slack but not enough to lift engine <safety thing
Remove engine mount bolts
Lift engine [ pull it out]

ps. i've done probably 20+ engine R&R's and SBC's are the easiest so don't worry about it.

HAHAHA! I took my motor out to rebuild it.

That turned into:

TH400 swap
Tubular mounts
Power brakes
Power Steering
68 Frontend swap
Wheels and tires

And guess what? Motor still isnt in the truck yet.

I would get all the grease off it before I started taking stuff off,put on some degreaser and get all the grease off,powerwasher is helpfull

If you have a steel line for your oil pressure (as original) do not forget to unhook it. It will make a hell of a mess if you forget that one thing and don't unhook it.

That’s what I’m say’n, the last motor I pulled was an AWD turbo 4g63 in a VR4 Galant.

I’m thinking of pulling my exhaust manifolds off and doing a test fit of the headers to double check fitment. If I pull my manifolds off, can they be reinstalled with out any issues?

I like unbolting the manifolds, and leaving them on the pipes in the engine compartment. Makes dropping the engine in easier. Instead of worrying about the pipes goinf up in the right area surrounded by the studs, you just drop the engine in and worry about the motor mounts.

Thanks, but I want to undo everything to test fit the headers anyway. Broke off one stud on the down pipe. I’m now starting to remove the manifolds. After the test fit the only thing is left is motor mounts then pull it out.
