Temperature sensor wire reroute

I have a 68 with the stock 307. I am getting ready to pull the motor so i can swap in a 350 that i am rebuilding. Currently the temp sensor wire for the gauge runs along the intake and is clipped to the factory valve covers. I don't plan on reusing the valve covers. How are people routing the temp sensor wire? I would think you would not want it just laying on the intake unsecured. Thanks!

Well you could swap your temperature sensor to the right cylinder head between cylinders 6 and 8 and run the wire to the firewall and over to the firewall block.
You can also run it down the left side of the block and clamp it to an oil pan bolt and run it to the back of the engine and over to the block.

This is a diagram showing the green wire and it's stock routing. If I can find a picture I will post it.VV






Here is one showing the temperature sender but it is a mechanical sender and does not go to the dash gauges. It shows how the wire could be routed over to the frame rail and back to the firewall.

The green temperature wire was originally enclosed in a small (1/4"?) fabric loom from the plastic harness conduit attached to the firewall. The loom was then clipped to the intake side of the left valve cover as described in post #1. At the front of the valve cover it dropped down to a clip attached to a threaded stud/bolt at the bottom of the water pump. The wire then ran rearward to the temperature sender.

I am also using valve covers without the clips and have the fabric wire loom lying on the intake side lip of the valve cover. So far, the wire has not changed position. I suspect that may be due to the rigidity added by the loom and the clip at the water pump.

The best pictures I have are attached. However, note in the second picture that I had the front clip and stud in the wrong position on the water pump. In the proper location, the clip would also have a more horizontal orientation.

Thanks for the help everyone. My wire loom is extremely greasy(just like the engine). Is it worth replacing? Below are pictures for reference. Ignore the mouse poop on the intake. That stuff gets everywhere!

As far as replacing it you can clean it up and inspect it but you will likely find there is some area that has dried out and started to rot. But you might be one of the lucky ones.
You can get new fabric covering at Napa. It is likely you will have to remove the connector body from the wire to replace the covering

Thanks. I will remember that if it ends up needing to be replaced. As greasy as it is I doubt it is dried out, but i will likely replace it. I have some other odds and ends that i want to tackle while the engine is out anyway.

Material looks correct, but it says "Wire & Cable Loom I.D. 3/4 in." in the description (could be an error). You want something about 1/4" or 3/16" I.D.

Yes that is it. It comes in 8 to10 different diameters.

Thanks. I looked around and it comes in several diameters online. Guess i need to start calling around and find it somewhere local.
