Painting a GMC grille

I have a 72 Gmc grille that I want to paint the center black again. Any tips of what paint I should use and how I could prep the grille? Thanks

Re: Painting a GMC grille

I would use a scotch brite pad first to scuff the chrome in those areas that will black again, then wash. Let dry, tack rag it, mask everything off that you want chrome still. Then I would spray some bulldog adhesion promoter to the area of black. Then follow up with a an etch primer, followed by black. If you skip the etch primer, make sure you definitely fog some coats of adhesion promoter before the black. Trevor

Re: Painting a GMC grille

On a nice grille I'd follow all of Trevor's advice. I wanted to freshen up my'72 grille when I got it back in '01. The grille is dulled and someone used roofing staples to fasten screen behind the openings, leaving little snake bit marks all around there. I scuffed with steel wool, masked, and sprayed satin black and it has held up nicely. I also did the headlight doors, leaving the outer rim chrome, because they had some pitting and were badly tarnished:
