I took my '77 to a garage that I trust and had them do it. I figured it was safer to let a professional do that.

Re: 1982 gmc AC r12

This is in a nut shell . . . every line has to be broken loose and cleaned internally with the proper cleaning products, every o-ring has to be replaced, once the system is reassembled the accumulator has to be replaced as does the orifice tube and new adapters added to the high and low side ports, then the new oil (normally Esther oil in a R12 to r134a conversion) is added to the system (some to the compressor itself and some to the high side), the system is vacuumed down to remove all air and moisture, the new refrigerant in now added . . .

Unless you have experience doing this work and the proper tools to pull the vacuum, then I really recommend having a qualified shop do the work, even if they let you supply the parts.

I did all the work to mine, cleaning, o-rings, new oil . . . then let Sears pull the vacuum and recharge . . . they destroyed my system because they didn't pull any vacuum and added even more oil then overcharged . . . don't take your truck to Sears, those guys are friggen idiots!

Yes you can do it at home, yes some people do it without pulling a vacuum, in the end the system lasts a much shorter time.
If you want it to last and work well, find a good shop and talk to them about options to keep costs down like supplying your own parts.

You can get a vacuum pump on autozones loaner tool program to pull a vacuum on your system. FYI

My R-12 all leaked out so i bought 3 cans of Dura-Cool and put it in after I fixed all the leaks. Works very well I must say for a DIY
