1950 AD Advice on Power Windows, Door Latches, Windshield Wiper and A/C
Hi Guys,
Getting ready to spend some money and would like some input on what has worked well and what to avoid. If you could tell me where you bought yours that would be great also. Power Windows - what brand/style do you recommend 12 Wipers - should I change out the entire factory stuff or just replace the motor with a new motor? I have seen some were you put an individual motor for each wiper and no transmission is needed. I have bear claw latches and need a keyless entry with selenoids and door poppers. A/C - I know there are several vendors - I'm thinking I will mount it behind the glove box and make my own A/C vent outlets. I see there is a new model with no cables available. Lastly - Has anyone done away with the metal framing aound the window and went to just the glass. I'm wondering what I need to do this and will is save me some money vs. buying windows with new window frames. Also if I give up this frame will it make putting power windows in more difficult? Thanks! |

Re: 1950 AD Advice on Power Windows, Door Latches, Windshield Wiper and A/C
Here is the run down on what I used.
Power windows - Nu-Relics. Great set up. Not cheap but built to last with a lifetime warranty (I think) http://www.nu-relics.com/ Wipers - can't help you as I'm not sure which ones I have (Newport Engineering I think) A/C - Vintage air Gen II (I think) which is electronically controlled and is made for AD trucks. works good but I still need to finish the A/C lines. Great product with good tech service. For door poppers, I used a Dakota digital 4000 series which has 7 channels. This is nice because I have mine set up to roll up/down the glass by remote. The thinking here was another way into the truck if the solenoid fails. The only down side was I had to upgrade to a 45LB solenoid as the ones that come with my kit only had 15lb and they were much too weak to open the door. I have poppers for the dorr but I'm not sure they are even needed as the door seals help to push the door open once the latch has been tripped. I used smooth side glass. The key is finding the correct window channel. It needs to be narrower on the inside since the glass is only 1/4" thick once the metal trim is removed. I picked mine up at a swap meet. Also don't do what I did when having your glass made. I need to have my side windows remade because I removed the metal trim prior to the new glass being made. This resulted in new glass that was a little too small. Leave your trim in place when you have the glass shop make its pattern. Another nice detail is to ask that the edges of the glass be polished. This didn't make it more difficult once you source the correct channel. Good luck Marc

You should take your truck back apart then post pictures of rebuilding it. It's much too nice not to have a build thread on here for us to learn from and enjoy..

Re: 1950 AD Advice on Power Windows, Door Latches, Windshield Wiper and A/C
I guess I'll chime in with youngrodder. My power windows are from Juliano's
(posi-glide) were easy to install and work great. I also when with the glass only no metal on the outside, just get the right channel. I have put Nu-Relic in other cars and are good pieces. I also used the elec motor in stock location, works good (Newport Eng. also). Same Vintage Air set-up for me. I used manual door releases for mine, no electrical. You can check out my build thread for more info. Best advice I can give is DON'T go for the cheap stuff, go with well established companies with good products and service....Jim
