Troubleshooting Assistance Please...

Alright, I took Ole B out for a cruise Saturday afternoon since it has been sitting for a while with all the rain and nasty weather the past month or so. The last time I drove it was in early January (I have been starting and running it every two weeks).

Like I said nice day took in on a spin, after about 4 or 5 miles while I was at a stop sign, as I pulled off I felt a good jolt then it just shut off on me (if it was a newbee I would think it was the timing belt). I got it over the side of the road, but could not find anything wrong. Full tank of gas, gas getting to the carb, good battery, crankshaft is turning, all indication is that it should start. The motor turns over (good strong revolutions) with good indications but it won't start. Seems like it's not getting any spark.

Putting it out for an analysis maybe someone has experienced the same thing.

Re: Troubleshooting Assistance Please...

Do you have an HEI, or Point type distributor? You might want to pull the distrubutor cap to see in the rotor is turning.

Re: Troubleshooting Assistance Please...

It's time to take it to a garage buddy.

There is no way for anyone to diagnose your problems over the internet.

It wouldn't have hurt had to posted which engine, transmission, ignition system, wiring harness etc. was in the truck. Most anything can make a truck shut off and there is no timing belt in a small block Chevrolet - if that was what you have. There is no timing belt in a straight six 250 either.

I understand there is not way for anyone to diagnose my problems over the internet. Just friendly conversation, exchanging ideals to see if I missed something (could be simple and I missed it) before I take it to my licensed mechanic. buddy.

Small block (only Chevys on this sight). I didn't say it was the timing belt. "If it was a newbie(later model vehicle with timing belts) the timing belt would have been my first guess."

There are hundreds of problems solved on this forum and many others. What would you have him do run to a garage every time something simple goes wrong. I do agree that the more information a person gives the more it helps to troubleshoot a problem. I see it all the time mostly with new posters.
They fail to mention even what year their truck is or if it's a v-8 or six.

The op here has given enough information to get some ideas what the problem may be so he will get his problem fixed soon.

Re: Troubleshooting Assistance Please...

Sorry for not giving the full information, I typed without checking what was written.

1970 Chevrolet C-10, 350 V8, 4BBL, 5.7L. 65,000volt HEI distributor.

Did most of the work myself, so that's why I am a little stumped. I'm sure it's in the ball park of the distributor I was just trying to get opinions to help me along when I get under the hood. Thanks for all the positive ones.

Thanks MSGT you raised the flag at the right time.

Re: Troubleshooting Assistance Please...

What are you running? V8, L6, or any other motor? You should check your timing and see if you have fire to the # 1 cylinder. That goes for any motor you have. Do you hear a knock when you try to crank the motor. Pull the valve cover and see if the valves are moving, also check for a bent pushrods.
For V8 pull the driverside valve cover. Good luck.

Re: Troubleshooting Assistance Please...

Check to be sure that you do not have spark at the spark plug. If you do not have a spark tester, just use a screwdriver. Put the end of the screwdriver in the end of the spark plug wire and find a convenient place to ground the screwdriver. IF you have no spark, check to see if you have 12v+ at the wire where it connects to the dizzy. IF you have 12v+ at the dizzy the trouble is inside the dizzy.

That's ok chief. I just disagreed and no offense meant to Monte either.
If you go to the top of this page there's a little box labeled user cp.
Click on that and it'll take you to a page called (your control panel) scroll down to the box labeled , edit signature, and click on that and it will let you make a signature with whatever you want in it. You can type in your info and you won't have to type it every time.
I got relatives in Charleston are you near there?

Re: Troubleshooting Assistance Please...

would like to point out that the rotors on hei dist are known to burn through which will the cause the module to fail. if you turn rotor over and see a dark spot in center, its starting to arc through and should be replaced.
