thoughts on this.

So as some of you know i have been looking for a 6.2 Diesel for my truck. a guy contacted me and we chatted about the 6.2 he has in a K30 dump truck (trucks toast he said) originaly he said 1300 for the whole truck than later on in the convo he said 1500 if he cuts the frame just before the cab.

I'm not sure if this is the route to go. i can go to the bone yard and pick up a otor and everything (if it's still there) for fairly cheap and rebuild it my self but this guy swears it's been well maintained and well cared for and only has 140 xxx KM on it.

What would you guys do?

Re: thoughts on this.

I think $1300 or $1500 for a 6.2 with 140,000 is insanity. No matter how good it is running.

Re: thoughts on this.

I just saw that you said 140,000 KM, so about 87000 miles. I still think that is too much. Maybe $500. It is just not that popular of a motor. At least around here. Most people swap them for a gas engine straight away.

Re: thoughts on this.

Donor is needed for all the little stuff (like fue lfilter/lines/dual batttery trays/fuel senders etc). I personally would not even attempt this swap without having a complete truck with the correct type of trans (manual or auto) to pilfer parts from. $1500-2500 buys a complete running driveable truck with a 6.2 here in MI. 80, 000 mile motor $600 tops, they pull it with all accessories and fuel set up, and I have to be able to drive it first. Unless you can drop the pan and inspect for cracks in the block, view it as a $150 core engine (unless it's a 1992-3). Check out detroit Craygslizt and you'll be suprized what you can find.

Don't want you to not get one, but almost nothing interchanges to SBC, and you need to understand that most of what you know about tuning a motor doesn't work on them.
I drove to work this morning in my 87 1/2 ton 6.2 auto. It's taken me about a year and $2000 to get it running 'okay'. That's beyond purchase price of the truck.

yeah he wont cut it up till i go see it.but i think it's a bit rich i ean i can get soe of my money back for the frane and front end stuff i don't use but it seems more practical to get thw whole thing take all i need and scrap the rest because a dump box and such wold be quite heavy no?

I'm not worried about getting it running as my good friend is a Diesel Tech by trade i just don't want to bother him with the swap i just want to call him and get him to come over and help if it's just not quite right. what do you mean nothing is interchangable?

Re: thoughts on this.

The accessories from a SBC don't mount up right on a diesel engine. Alternator can interchange, but you have to use the diesel spacer mount. A/C pump needs a diesel specific mount. Power steering needs a specific mount. So basically all the stuff will work, but you have to find the diesel style mounts. I think 1300 for a 6.2 is ridiculous, too. I paid 600 for mine, and it's a J code with 90k miles on it.

$1300 for a complete truck yes but for a front cut of the frame is no go

plus nothing like that exsists in canada. CC duallys are rare.

Re: thoughts on this.

I just found a complete 6.2 on CL here in Florida (it's actually in lower Alabama though) that the guy is selling for 600 o.b.o. for the whole thing, accessories included. That's pretty much the exact right price range that I'd be willing to go for. Otherwise... you could always try the government liquidation website. Don't know exactly how it works because I've never used the site myself other than looking, but I know you can get brand new crate 6.2's with 0 miles on them for less than $1000.

I want to say it is a '91 as I kept thinking that it would have the 4l80 tranny in it.
Also, I haven't seen this truck, but those years should be rust free around here unless they grew-up someplace else.
I think the price was $2400; with the CAD being above the USD now, that should be like $500 CAD..., right??

I would think pulling the drop parts off your current truck and installing on a new truck would be far less work that doing a complete swap over to diesel, with less headaches.

Re: thoughts on this.

swaping the smallblock to the 6.2 engine would be just as easy to remove the complete drop kit and install it on another truck or making a shortbed into a longbed.

your doing the same thing when you converting from carb to TBI or LSX swaps
so if you want TBI or an ls motor in you old truck go get a new truck? too much work??

is it because people are just lazy or just have something agains this model engine?

Re: thoughts on this.

if its a K30 for 1300 take the whole truck scrap it and you could sell the d60 and matching 14ff for 1300 up here. plus the dump box might be able to get 500 out of it if the hoist and everything is somewhat decent. I would say if you want the 6.2 you would still be making money on this deal other than the 5 hours of driving or more if that's one way

a weekend your up and running again get that K30 complete as you will then have the high output 6.2 145HP with J-code heads, intake, pump and injectors

sell the parts of it and score all the parts for a turbo conversion 200hp and 20mpg

Lol... extremely well said.

I actually think the engine swap would be easier than anything else. I had my SBC out, and the 6.2 in and turning over in a single day. And I did it on my own. No help from friends, no extra set of hands. It took me a few days to figure out the not-starting issue on the diesel, but after I worked everything out, I've had no problems with it since then.
