rearend question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I was hoping someone could help me identify the make of this rearend.. it came on my GMC. I think its a 73-87 rearend cos the shock mounts alternate front and back on each side, its a 14bolt

the passenger side of the housing on the shaft says. KHF and then some numbers.. I can't read em from the pic and its too dark to go try, if they're relevant to knowing the make tho I can go check tomorra

That is a 10.5" Corporate FF rear axle. The positive ID is easy because it has six bolt holding the pinion housing onto the axle housing (by the yoke.)

would this be a terriblly... rare or expensive axle? I mean would this be something that someone might be looking for?

thanks for the info.. I'm not sure where this rearend came from but it fits on this GMC pretty well.

they are really common in 73 thru 87 chevys the newer style ive heard bad things about ,,but usually if it was a 3/4 through 73 and up it had one of these rear ends in it.. yes they are desirable rears but since they are so common theyre not really expensive,,plus youre price would be associated with the gears? locker? ,, any of that,, most wer 4:10 or 4:11's but i have heard of some ppl saying there were afew with 3:42,s ,, i havnt personally seen one of these critters but ive been told theyre out there

well, if I ever sell the cab off this truck I'll take the rearend out and pop the cover off and see what kind of gears are in it.

Jack up the rear spin the tire and count your rotations of the yoke will tell you what gears it has. Most older chevy's had a sticker mounted in the glove box that told if these corporate rearends had an optional limited slip in them. I have had several with this option in them

oh this isn't an OEM rearend.. this is under a 68 GMC half ton..

I am parting the truck, I may sell the rearend with the frame unless someone wants it.

its a good body truck too. dunno why I haven't got any inquiries..

That rear end is out of a 73 or newer 30 series van. The shock mounts being reversed from the locations on a 73 or newer pickup is the clue. The van & possibly a "forward control" p- chassis (the kind of boxy truck tool, bread & chip companies use with the flat steep windshield) are the only ones that have shocks positioned like that. If it is from a van, it is probably 4.10's, p- chassis with a 6 cyl. usually 4.56's. The van rear end is preferred by some mud draggers. I believe it is a little wider wheel track than the pickup rear ends. Since a 4x4 front axle has wider wheel track than the rear, It brings the rear tires following the front's ruts better.

If it is the full floating axle type, it has a 10-1/2" ring gear. SUPER TOUGH!
