Question Power steering questions

Alright guys, time for you help once again. A few months ago I converted from manual steering to powersteering on my truck. I took the box of an 84 chevy and put it on my 69 k10. Well now the box is getting really loose and I need to fix it. I've looked around town and really can only find 2wd boxes. So is there a difference between the boxes or can I just use the 2wd? Or can I rebuild the one I have? I kinda need to do this somewhat cheaply, being as i'm 17. So what are my options. Thanks again guys.

Unfortunetly, you cannot use a 2wd box in place of a 4wd box. The difference is in the pitman arm and they are not interchangeable. You will need to either find another 4wd box or see about rebuilding yours. I've never rebuilt one so I don't know what's involved or how common the parts are. If you ever decide to run a "crossover steering" setup, you will need to snag one of those 2wd boxes.

Thanks for the reply Pont, too bad, I was really hoping I could just use the 2wd ones. If I were to do the crossover steering, what would be involved with that? About how much would it cost me? Thanks again guys.

well, it's not all that hard to do a crossover steering and it's not very expensive. The trick is finding someone that can weld and fabricate at a reasonable price. First, you would need to get a 2wd power steering box (with pitman arm). Then, you would need to cut about 6 inches off the end of your exsisting steering arm and have it bolted and welded to the passenger side steering knuckle. Then you need to make a tie-rod bar long enough to go from the pitman arm on the steering box, over to the passenger side steering knuckle and connect to the piece of old steering arm that you bolted and welded on that side. Naturally, you would need tie-rod ends on both ends of your new tie-rod bar. It can be made to be adjustable on both ends or have one tie-rod ended welded to your new bar, and just make one side adjustable. However, if the welded tie-rod end ever went bad or needed replaced, you would need to weld a new one on instead of just threading a new one on.

Hope this crude description helps. I don't currently have any pics of my setup on my computer but I have posted several pics in the past if you want to try and do a search.

Pont, any thoughts on what year 2wd box would work? I can get one off the 89 1 ton that I got the engine from.

If I remember right your 1 ton was the old body style? 73 to 80 something. The box will work but the fitting for the lines are probably different. Nothing that a flaring tool and union wont fix though.

I have had it on a dana 44 and now on my Dana 60..

Hey Yukon, that 89 box should mount just fine but as 6869704x4 said, the fittings will be different. Somewhere around 1980 or 81, they went from a standard inverted flare to the metric o-ring style fitting. You could have a pressure hose made to fit (inverted flare on the pump end and o-ring style on the box end) but it might be spendy. If you go with the late model steering box, make sure you use the pump as well. That will make it alot easier when it comes time to replace that hose.
