72 Wood Grain Door Inserts in Non wood grain panel OEM or Repro Door Panels

After reading up on it a bit I've decided to have my wood grain inserts restored.

My door panels had been cut out for speakers so they are rubbish.

I'm looking at buying used 72 door panels. They are in good shape, but I don't know if they came from the factory with the Super wood grain inserts.

There is a chrome trim around where the wood grain panels WOULD be, but of course there is no wood grain.

Are these panels compatible with my original factory wood grain inserts?

What about Repros from LMC? I would guess they are rubbish, but maybe not?

I'll try and answer this one for you cedorris.

If the new door panels have the chrome trim they will work with your door inserts.

You'll have to be careful removing your chrome from your old ones. The clips are more like a soldered nail on the back of your chrome strips.

Mine has 2 of the clips (or bendable nails) broken off. I haven't quite figured out how I'm going to fix that one.

Good luck and yes, it's very doable.

LMC's are not complete junk, they will work, but they are nowhere near factory looking. They are ABS plastic versus the original aluminum ones, but you can modify non deluxe door panels to put the woodgrain on. Just need to drill holes to put the trim on. I did this on my first truck, with the plain jane 72' door panels and put the woodgrain on them. Trevor

Trevor,
He said that the door panels he's looking at already had the chrome strip. Shouldn't it just be a matter of pulling the trim and laying the inserts in and putting his trim back on?

no, I caught that. On another thread in the parts section he asked if any 72' door panel would work. You can use the 72' deluxe panels (scroll pattern w/ chrome trim) which would involve removing the chrome trim delicately and putting the woodgrain underneath it and reusing the chrome trim. Or like I said, use 72' regular door panels (No scroll pattern on them, and drill holes for the chrome trim to be applied and run the woodgrain over it. The latter one was the one I am talking about because you can really use either one, EXCEPT for the new reproduction scroll door panels because they don't fit quite right and normally get out of whack in the molding process. Re: 72 Wood Grain Door Inserts in Non wood grain panel OEM or Repro Door Panels

Ok, I think I'm getting some good information here.

To summarize:
-Any style of 72 door panels CAN be compatible with wood grain inserts.
-The type with the chrome ring and scrolling is the Deluxe style and these are ALREADY compatible with wood grain inserts.
-Repros don't fit quite right and repro scrolled panels are not compatible with wood grain inserts.

Is this about it?
